Plexi? JTM45? Matchless?

Re: Plexi? JTM45? Matchless?

I've played the Matchless DC30 and thought it a very nice amp. I loved the cool spongey feel of the amp. I also liked how it responded to picking dynamics. The DC30 doesn't sound as "big" as a JTM-45 type amp though IMO. I havn't played a Chieftan though. By big I don't mean louder.

I've also played a 65 JTM-45 with NOS GEC KT66's, through a Greenback loaded 4x12, and that was the best amp I've ever played. Period. That particular JTM had the touch dynamics of the DC30, but sounded huge, without being boomy. Wish I could have brought that one home. I'm thinking a custom made JTM may be more like that one was.

If you want clean and full, a DR504 Hiwatt clone maybe what you are looking for.
Those are great amps, clear and sounds good at almost levels and styles.

ABsolutely!!!!!!!

A 70's HIWATT will more than do the trick!

If you want sweet articulation, a focused "smaller", chimey sound and a lot of smoothness go EL84.

If you want balls and size - EL34's all the way! I appreciate the headroom as well.
