Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

I like to set the strings on the bass side fairly moderate but on the treble side they get in closer. Some would not like that cuz it ends up not following the radius perfectly but it works for me

I do it the opposite! I have the treble strings a bit higher than normal for better tone.

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

Mine is as low as it can possible get without any buzz. I have tried having one guitar setup a bit higher I just don't enjoy it.

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

a US quarter barely grazes the underside of the string at the highest fret

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

Almost no relief in the neck (straight). Nut cut low enough to just see a sliver of daylight between the string and 1st fret when pressing down the 2nd, and basically as low as I can get it without fret outs and sitar buzz. I don't worry about some buzz on the low strings because you can't totally eliminate it when you're using a 13-64 set.

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

I am surprised no one mentions that the radius of the neck plays into your action. With a 7.5, you cannot go real low without a ton of buzz and fretting out. With a modern 17" , for example, radius, you can lower the strings quite qa bit and play without tons of buzz and also do deep bends.
I like my action low, if permitted, however miss the deep tone of big strings and hioh action.

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

I gots to bend the strings. I just gots to.
On that, I'm pretty unbending.

Moderate.
The point about radius is good, but I still use a moderate/medium action anyway (don't have any guitars currently with a fretboard radius smaller than 12 inches).
I use to play with a much lower action, but I raised it up. It sounds better to me this way and I actually play better too and I definitely can't go back to a low action now.
String height isn't heavily dictated by style of music, I just go purely on what's comfortable.

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

All of my guitars have more modern flatter neck radii, but I struggle to get the higher strings under my fingers if I have the action set too low so I have a moderate setting.

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

Wow, that could also double as a bow for archery use haha. I've set up a LOT of guitars for people over the years, never had anyone request action that high. Paired with such thick strings I give you props for the finger strength to even play that.

That's actually how mine looks. When I go back home from college, I'm gonna try to lower it. I want to be able to do two hand tapping again. I don't remember why I set it that high, but it sucks.

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

I just dropped the Strat to 4/64" on both E's at the 12 fret. (Micro-Tilt is pretty nice when the saddles are bottomed out!) At this point with 9's I think I can blame any playing challenges on myself, not the guitar. ;)

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

No pictures but .004 relief and 3/64s action at the twelfth fret.

Re: Poll: Action, how do you roll?

I've been getting away with using an 18" straightedge or the string at the 1st and last frets:

.008" relief

graduating between .060" at the high E and .070" at the low E at the highest fret. a tad higher for a 7.25" radius.
