PowerStage 170 Seen on "That Pedal Show"

Re: PowerStage 170 Seen on "That Pedal Show"

There are many *great* preamps to be had, whether tube, solid-state, tubes with solid-state or digital.

I wouldn't close my mind off to options simply because they are not tube-based.

ah, i was a little confused when you said your power engine... all good! i was referring to the post above mine that was talking about preamps
I'm still annoyed about Mick's comments that were fueled by his bias against solid state power amps. Maybe he'd still cling to his beliefs after a proper audition, but it didn't help the cards were stacked against the 44 Magnum and PowerStage 170 because he clearly didn't understand how they're supposed to be used.

Sure, I tried the Theta preamp which is solid state, what a great metal sound. I know of several SS and tube preamps in pedal format out there and I am always open to suggestions. Any digital preamps or tubes with solid state preamps that you like?

You have your basic list of good modelers going back about 10 years. Blackstar makes good preamps which are a blend of tube and solid state. Tube preamps with diode clipping stage(s) which some will also consider as a hybrid of tube and solid-state.

I don't really have a list of anything I think you must try personally, if that's what you're asking.

I have an HD500 and have no issues with it either at home or playing out. Other than some rack stuff and the preamps in my heads that I will occasionally send to an additional poweramp (wet/dry or wet/dry/wet), that's the extent of what I do with preamps. The Tech 21 Fly Rig is a great little platform and I have liked their products for going on three decades now.

A Phase 90 into an OD into an MIAB into a Tech 21 Blonde into an M9 going to a PS170 driving a 1x12 and I can travel light.

I completely understand your comment as it is very practical but I think it is not fair to compare new vs used prices.

Oh, I agree that Duncan can't price compared to used equipment. I just meant I would be a lot more excited if it were less expensive. If I were still playing out a couple nights a week I would probably get one just for the size & weight.
