Preferred Guitar Strap Material

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

leather or nylon with a duct tape shoulder pad

an relly, kramersteen dude, you should do a crocodile strap, maybe with the teeth as studs....

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

Honestly I just use the standard Ernie Ball straps. Comfy and cheap... just like an old pair of jeans

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

In all seriousness, I use a Neotech strap.
Made of neoprene/foam/leather and it isn't flashy, it's affordable and it feels damn nice. Doesn't dig in at all. I also have a thin vintage style leather Fender strap that is pretty cool.

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

I like leather with the rougher unpolished side towards me. I've got a three inch one for my Charvel So Cal and a five inch strap for my 11 lb bass guitar . . . both work great and are very comfortable.

+1 i find the rougher unpolished side inwards help with neck diving issues too. i use two straps, 2.5" fender strap for strat style bodies (with strap locks, so i can use it on whichever guitar i use), and levy's 3.5" for heavier Ibby Musician and jazz bass.

leather straps are awesome, however with plenty of sweat they will stretch overtime. nothing you cant fix with little adjustment, and I find them so cool as they age.

something i'm GASing over longtime are the Levy's No. 1 Stretch Strap. i think they serve a purpose with heavier guitars being sort of weight absorbers, and buckethead stage antics are big proponent

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

Preferably leather, 2" wide, possibly with padding, or nylon with leather ends. Years ago, I used to have a "stretch strap" made by, I think it was Dunlop. Some sort of elastic material. Loved it. Anyone know if they are still available?

Dimarzio made Clip Lock straps that were elastic many years ago. Those might still be on the market. I had one in the 1990's. But I got rid of it at some point.

I like cotton straps. Very comfortable and look cool. And to me the look is more important than tone that the strap imparts.
If the guitar is neck-heavy, then it becomes more important to have a suede strap. I also have a couple of the Carvin padded straps which are great if the instrument is heavier or if the headstock tends to drop down.

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

Levy's M7GG3 leather strap. Wide, long and perfect.

(That's what she said, harr harr).

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

I've used a Planet Waves Wide bass strap for years.. It's like 4 inches wide so it distributes the weight better, and it has a pad underneath.. Plus it extends way out.. Which is a must for me..

I also have a planet waves strap that has built in locks on it. And it's fairly comfy, but the adjustment plastic piece broke within a month of owning it.. So apparently the quality isn't there.. Luckily I like the strap long, or it'd be useless..

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

I would be curious how comfy they are as well, the second from the right in the image you posted is very similar to the one I was referring too.

Pretty cool stuff...and Ive seen car seats/supports/covers made of rounded wood that I guess some people find comfortable to sit on, so perhaps a wooden strap (done correctly) could be comfortable as well...

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

DiMarzio "seatbelt" ClipLock straps, but I do have a couple of cotton ClipLocks that I much prefer. The seatbelts are great for testing if the strap pins were properly located (usually not), but the cotton stay in place, which is a big help when dealing with a guitar that wants to act stupid and hang parallel to the floor (because the strap pins were not properly located).

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

I'm a fan of the Levy's cotton straps with the leather ends. For me the most important part of a strap is the width, too thin or too wide and it really hurts my shoulder for some reason. After that, the most important detail is of course aesthetics, and I still just like how cotton straps look on my guitars.
