Preferred Guitar Strap Material

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

i'm having issues with one strap of mine being little too wide. it helps with heavy guitars, but I often find myself having to pull away the the strap from my neck. it is a plain leather, and i've thought that i should strip off the excess width myself.

is there anything i should look out for while cutting leather. do you guys think, i should strip off from both sides equally or tad more from the inner edge.

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

The two straps I really love.

The Levy's distressed cotton straps are thick, strong, and don't slide at all. Very cool straps.

Also love the Ernie Ball leather studded strap, cheap and they slide just enough without being slippery.

on the pricey end I really liked the Dunlop/Red Monkey 3 inch wide strap... was comfortable as all get out.

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

prefer wide 3" suede leather

Levys and Franklin

I have in the past had one of the Carvin Padded straps
it seemed to come apart after only 10 years

I have had a Martin Leather strap on my Martin continuously for the last 15 years
and have yet to notice the finish being bad

my current glove leather Franklin strap gets passed back and forth from each guitar

my basses have a single strap that gets passed around between them

my buddy has a genuine Snake/Leather strap made for him by an incarcerated relative

Definitely the Levy's Distressed Cotton! Love mine!

I have one strap like this, and it has taken me a while to get used to it. Sometimes you can simply work the leather back and forth in your hands to make it more soft and supple, and that can help make it more comfortable--but it does take some time--and that's what I did with this strap.

The Levy's carving leather straps work best for me in the 2.5" width; the 3" straps can be a little stiff, even the padded ones. The soft 3" leather Franklin straps work great on my Les Pauls and won't bind on my neck and are very comfortable.

I think trying to cut it is more trouble than it's worth, but it can be done. I'd buy a better, more comfortable strap and sell or donate the one you have to a needy young musician.

Good luck!

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

I've got 3 of these, and 2 of them I've had in service for about 5-6 years.

Comfy right off the bat, like buttah when they break in. AND... the adjust out to 60".

I occasionally go nylon, in which case I've gone with the JS straps from Planet Waves.

What floors me is what Souldier is getting for seatbelt straps. They gave those away with guitars in the 90's, and the EB Nylon straps were considered a step up.

There use to be a company called Earth III, and they had great cotton straps, very much like the Levy's cotton straps.

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

Levy's and Franklin leather for me for the most part. I do have a Dimarzio as well.

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

I prefer a leather shell that's padded in the middle with a suede inner that touches my shoulder. That prevents any guitar that might neck dive from happening

Re: Preferred Guitar Strap Material

A big internally padded 4" wide Levys "Garment Leather" with Schaller Locks... It's a couple years old now and sees daily use and still looks and seems practicly the same as the day I bought it. no stretching or tearing or anything anywhere.
