pro's/cons about Peavey Classic

Re: pro's/cons about Peavey Classic

OK buttmunch...so ya did'nt notice my :fingersx: whatever. Ignore list time for you.

Wow, you're the most immature 51 year old man I've ever come across, I don't exactly mind that you put me on ignore.

Re: pro's/cons about Peavey Classic

I own a Peavey Classic 30. I wasn't that crazy about the tone either. Until tht is, that I replaced the speaker and put better tubes in it.
I swapped in a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker. And I tried several tube combinations before settling on JJ/Tesla for the ecc83s's and NOS RCA's for the EL-84's.
Talk about night and day!
I play a '62 RI Stratocaster mainly, and the clean tone (eq = Bass=7, mid=5, treble=6), is very rich and warm and liquid sounding.
The main downside of the little Peaveys is the printed circuit board is pretty flimsy with the tube sockets soldered right to it. This is a good amp to set up, and leave sit. Not too good for traveling with from gig to gig.
Hope this helps.

It sure does help. I won't be travelling so that aspect doesn't matter much, but I appreciate your advice about the tubes and speaker. :)

Re: pro's/cons about Peavey Classic

ive had a fender dual showman reverb head and crate blue voodoo combo.
they both had a better clean tone but only at loud and overbearing volumes.
the fender had a high maintenance trouble and the crate was sometimes a too trebly with the strat and couldn´t use it for live gigs ever.

now i use the classic 50 4x10 and believe me i can play hard rock tunes with only the drive channel.clean depends on the guitar ,with my strat it shines and with a les paul it sucks and farts with darker paf pickups.

Re: pro's/cons about Peavey Classic

I gotta chime in here...

I owned a Classic 30 for a while and I wasn't impressed enough with it to keep it. The first channel was good for playing Blues if you cranked it. The second channel I found tonally shifted dramatically as it got past a certain point. I discovered this at a gig when I had to turn up and suddenly it sounded like an entirely different amp.

It was between a Blues Junior with the Billm mods and the Classic 30 and it was a no-brainer. The Classic 30 got sold off and I couldn't of been happier with the decision.

Re: pro's/cons about Peavey Classic

I had a Classic 30 for about 2 weeks. I Never liked the O.D. channel that much and the clean channel was unable to be even remotely hang with a hard hitting drummer. But my 12 watt Princeton could hold it's own with that same drummer? I'm still scratching my head on that one??:13:

What's the Billm mods? I'm not exactly very good at electronics so I wouldn't be able to mod anything, but I'd like to know what it does.

So it's not very loud for being a tube amp? That would be a problem if I were to play with a band :blackeye:

Tube amps tend to distort when you turn the volume up. So you need a bigger amp and bigger speakers if you want to play loud and have clean tone. Solid state amps stay clean when the volume is turned up.

Did you try the uke through your own amps? I wonder how it sounds through a Marshall...

I haven't tried it through the Marshall but through the Laney, and of course it doesn't work too good for chords, you could probably fire off a distorted solo or whatever, but I prefer to play it with cleans ;)

Re: pro's/cons about Peavey Classic

Well, since alot of you guys say that I should probably go for solidstate/digital stuff, I need your recommendations on that. Not too expensive amps, though.

Right now I can afford amps like:

Hughes and Kettner Edition Blue 60R
Roland Cube 30X
Vox AD30VT

Could you suggest more to me?

Re: pro's/cons about Peavey Classic

I forgot to add that I'm willing to look at acoustic amps and keyboard amps as well, if you have any recommendations.

Re: pro's/cons about Peavey Classic

I like the Vox Valvetronix amps.. they have a tube in them and you can get many good things out of them. I have less experience with them, but, with the patches option on them you can get a few types of cleans for every gig with the uke.
The Marshall ValveState was the amp I used for a year now... really warm cleans.. nice tube distortion...
Roland Cubes... really good cleans. Solid State distorion is a bad sounding thing.

I played a Crate solid state i liked but those are the only few good solid state/hybrid amps I know.

Re: pro's/cons about Peavey Classic

The distortion doesn't matter, I'm interested in the clean side of things. ;)

Re: pro's/cons about Peavey Classic

Damn it!! I keep getting GAS for those classic 30 amps! I heard a soundclip of one, with a strat played through the clean channel and it sounded gorgeous.

It seems like half of the people like the classics, and the other half doesn't.

Re: pro's/cons about Peavey Classic

Argh why did I delete the post!

Some months ago I was looking for a new amp. Got the Engl Screamer now but I liked the Classic very much too. Nice cleans and the OD channel was useful too!

I played VHTs, Mesas and Marshalls and I liked these 2 combos (Screamer and Classic) best.

The thing is, I read that the Peavey is not that great for a band (see kmcguitars post). I read somewhere it's not super reliable..not sure but there was something. But that doesn't mean it will happen to you, too. The people who are satisfied with the amp won't write on boards, there are far more threads in generel where people have problems with their amps/guitars etc. and you thing it's common for that particular brand.

But if I haven't had the money for the Screamer it would be the Classic for sure. You have to play it and see in which group you belong to. Either you like it, or not.

Yeah, I know you usually have to try things, but I don't really have that possibility, there aren't many shops here. I usually have to listen to what people say, and try to make a decision based on that.

Ok! Hang on, I asked a member in another forum who had this amp. He has some clips I think.

Perhaps it'll help you!

Re: pro's/cons about Peavey Classic

I would certainly appreciate it if you could post them! thanks ;)

There's a user over the the Fender Forum named Billm that did a bunch of mods to Blues Juniors that did things like add a Presence and some brightness, altered the tone stack and made the reverb a little more consistent.

If you're interested in knowing more than do a Google search.

The mods weren't tough. All in all it took me a few hours to do them from hardware he sells as a kit. It did alot to improve the tone of the amp and I liked it alot more than the original.

That's pretty cool, thanks.
