Punk amps for $500?

Re: Punk amps for $500?

Any low wattage tube amp would be fine for what you're looking for... the "best one" is whichever one you like the best. If it were me I'd get the Bassbreaker 007 or an Orange Micro Terror.

Re: Punk amps for $500?

The Vox AC10C1 is currently my favorite amp. I don't own one, I just play one at my shop when we're slow. I own a Blues Jr, and I like it a lot. I use it for punk with some good overdrive. Just an FYI, it did just go out on me during a gig. Probably just an output cap, but still. I'm currently using a Peavey Valveking combo I picked up for a couple hundred for a backup, and it's really killer.

Seriously, though, you can make anything punk, and that's the point of punk. Go to your local shop and plug in. See what sounds good to your ears.

Re: Punk amps for $500?

According to Steve Jones, his certainly were.

Re: Punk amps for $500?

Yeah. I've heard a lot of good about the Vox. And the blues Jr has good reviews, I was just worried about the gain on it. It seemed to have a lot of clean headroom, which makes sense considering that's what it was made for. But I guess it should play well with pedals seeing as it works for you.

Re: Punk amps for $500?

The micro terror is another I had been considering, but the fact that it's a hybrid amp kind of pushed me away. The little bassbreaker looks amazing though. I definitely want one of those.

I just re-read your OP and realized you're not playing with a drummer.

This guy is on sale:

They don't seem to have the 2x12 JCA24S cab in stock but, unless they raised the price, that pair would keep up around $500.

Re: Punk amps for $500?

That little head would be perfect for me. I know of a little Blackstar 1x12 for $210 out there. Thanks again for the recommendation!

Re: Punk amps for $500?

Agreed with whats been said, there is not a "punk" brand as most of the bands used whatever they could scrape up, beg, borrow or steal.. When I think of punk, I personally think of a marshall over a fender. (im more ramones and pistols than I am clash) Im also a metal guy, so I rarely look at fender amps. Lots of options.. with a fender you'll need a dirt pedal , with the Jet city itll be great with not much gain.

Gilmour,
Im not well versed in Bugera's other than they are good bang for the buck, most of the original gremlins were worked out and that most of their models are a take off on something else. What is the 1990 similar too? thats a Marshall one right?? I cant believe they are $399?? Of course I had to chuckle at the listing.. Hand built 120 watt amplifier..

I run the Orange Micro Terror through a Marshall 2x12 that rig would cost you $450 brand new. It sounds fantastic and you could get all of the Pistols, Clash and Ramones you want out of it without pedals. So what if it is a hybrid, there are good tube amps, good solid state amps and good hybrids. This is the real deal.

Re: Punk amps for $500?

we arent very punk then :D
Admittedly, I'm more hippy metal with a healthy portion of '80s shred.

Re: Punk amps for $500?

Even I love the br00tz sometimes (slayer, cannibal corpse, you know, Teh br00tz!) Hell I almost started this thread under good metal amps for $500. Me, not having a cab, has been eyeing up a solid stare Randall stack with a 4x12 for $500. Just for the cab so I can buy heads instead of only being able to afford combos.

The 1990 is their take on the Marshall JCM900. Other modes: 1960=Marshall 1959 SLP, 6260=Peavey 5150/6505, 6262=Peavey 5150 II/6505+, 333=Peavey XXX, 333XL=Peavey JSX (I think), Trirec=Mesa Rectifier, and just guessing here T50=Vox Night Train 50.

Re: Punk amps for $500?

As said before . . . asking what amp or guitars is ''PUNK'' is NOT very punk.

Saying that, i have seen a punk'ish band getting GREAT tones from a VOX AC50 CPH, and JCM900.
The lyrics sucked, big time, but the tone was brilliant !
