push-pull pot coil tapping schematic?

I have a 4-conductor SD Jazz humbucker in the neck of my Les Paul. I bought a 500K push-pull pot in order to coil tap into a single coil sound. I need some help with the wiring. There are six tabs on the bottom of the pot and no labelling/instructions. I'm assuming the red and white wires (typically soldered together for humbucking) go on there, but which tabs do I solder them to? I couldn't find a clear answer from the SD wiring pages. Thanks for any help!!

Use this diagram as a reference:

Connect a wire from the terminal thats right above the red/white terminal, (shown with the arrow), to:

1. the black wire that comes off the pup, to split to the adjustable coil.

2. to ground, to split to the stud coil.

Hey thanks for the drawing. So, the red and white wires both go to the same terminal? I assumed that they need to be on separate terminals in order to "split", but I may understand the concept correctly. I assume it is more common to use the coil with adjustable poles for the tap? Well . . . yes and no.

Look at this drawing:

You can see that the black and white wires are the adjustable coil, and the red and green wires are the stud coil. If you connect them all up to an on/off/on DPDT, (which a push/pull pot is not, btw), you can see how, if I flip the switch one way, I short out the adjustable coil, and if I flip the switch the other way, I short out the stud coil. Thats why you connect both the red and white to the center.

As for the "normal" coil to split . . . I would assume that you'ld want to leave the adjustable coil active, however . . . every SD schematic that has splitting, has the stud coil active. :smack:

I think I asked once before why they do that, but either didn't get an answer, or I can't remember what it was. :laugh2:

Thanks for your help. I got it to work! I put the black wire on the bottom instead of the top terminal by accident. Push is single coil, pull is humbucking. I assume if I moved the black wire to the top (instead of bottom) then push would be humbucking and pull is single coil? Also, when single coil is active, I get some 60 cycle hum while both PUs are selected (middle position on guitar). I thought both PUs would cancel hum, even if one was in single coil mode?

Thanks for your help. I got it to work! I put the black wire on the bottom instead of the top terminal by accident. Push is single coil, pull is humbucking. I assume if I moved the black wire to the top (instead of bottom) then push would be humbucking and pull is single coil? Also, when single coil is active, I get some 60 cycle hum while both PUs are selected (middle position on guitar). I thought both PUs would cancel hum, even if one was in single coil mode?

Only if that middle pickup is a RWRP single coil. You may be able to cancel hum with a middle humbucker, but that requires some involved wiring.

Thanks. Am I right about the other issue? Change push/pull function by moving the black wire from top to bottom. One other question. There's a pair of terminals at each level (left and right) on the pot. Do these function the same (left side vs. right side)? I put the white/red pair on one side of the middle terminals, but couldn't I have also put red on one middle terminal and white on the other middle terminal?
