Question on Installing Sperzel's.

My friend has some sperzels, they work great and I'm thinking of buying some. However, he got them installed at a guitar shop, but I'd like to do it on my own. So, has anyone installed Sperzels on their own? What sort of preperation, specialized tools, experience etc. do I need to do it?

Re: Question on Installing Sperzel's.

I have locking sperzels in polished aluminum. You will have to drill one hole. I don't know the exact diameter of the hole. But the diameter seems to be the same as my stock fender tuners were. I had 2 holes for each machine for my fender strat stock tuners, I had to drill 1 in between the two for the sperzels for each machine.

All you need is a fast drill and a sharp drill bit. (I broke 2 drill bits while trying to drill through my hard maple headstock)

Here's mine:

Re: Question on Installing Sperzel's.

Not all Sperzals are created equal. There are different bushing sizes for use in different guitars and you have to get the correct set. I installed a set of Sperzal locking tuners on my Strat and the bushings fit the holes in my headstock without modification, except I did have to drill one small hole on the back of the headstock behind every tuner for a small locator/lock pin. The Fender A/S tuners had two pins, the Sperzal just one in the center. It was very easy to do.

If you get the right tuners for that guitar, the install is very easy.

Re: Question on Installing Sperzel's.

Let a pro do it, you dont want to risk cracking the headstock. A better option would be the new Grover Locking tuners or the Planet Waves locking tuners, you dont have ta drill any extra holes for the pins like on the Sperzel, they mount just like the original machine heads, 1 screw on the back of the headstock and one nut on the other side on the tuner. You can change out the tuners in about 10 min, just take the old ones off and put the new ones on, that simple. Good luck.
