i decided to jump the gun and build the jmp-1/mesa 20/20 setup. still waiting for a couple more paychecks to purchase the pre and power amps, but this is where i'm at so far.

i got the tuner and the furman from my band's ex-bassist for $130, which made me real happy because of how much of a steal that was :D . and as you can see i'm building the case myself, which will save me somewhere near $100 when all is said and done. i have 6 rack spaces up there, and a spot for the dual rectifier. now i'll never play a show without a backup amp, and everything is all together in one package (and a heavy package it's going to be :smack: ). still have to mount the rails in there, cover the case in tolex, install the handles, corners, and make lids for the front and back, and sometime after that the jmp-1 and 20/20 will come into the picture.

speaking of which, does anyone know where you can find tolex for a reasonable price? i've seen it on partsexpress.com, but i'm just curious if there's anywhere that has it for cheaper.

Hey dude, looks like a great start, I dunno where to get tolex, but good luck and I can't wait to see the final product!

Re: rack project in construction, PICS!!!

Is that AAAA Quilted maple you used for that rack shelf?
Seriously... are you sure this thing can hold the weight of all those amps? I'm not a pro on wood constructions, but that looks kinda unstable to me (not that I'm questioning your craftmanship in any way, I'm just curious)

Re: rack project in construction, PICS!!!

only problem i see is that mesa rec in there hehe :D. thats a joke.

good job. keep it up!!

You've got a nice rack!

I'm surprised no one beat me to that. It is looking pretty nice, though.

Re: rack project in construction, PICS!!!

I don't know where you can get tolex, but if you need a replacement for it, check out the strech pleater from www.spandexhouse.com

(ignores questions about why I know about the page ;) )

well it's just a piece of 1x1 maple for the support along the bottom of the rack shelf, but the actual rack shelf is just apiece of plywood ;)

i'm still trying to find a way ro reinforce the very bottom of it to hold the weight of the dual rectifier, but other than that she is very sturdy. the metal L brackets really do hold it together very tight, but if i use the same bolts as i did for the top corners, then they'll stick out too much and get in the way of the head. but i'm sure it will come to me soon.

thanks for all the replies fellas!

Pretty sweet...It is gonna weigh a ton, which as we all know equals great tone! :D What is the setup going to be? You'll have the recto and the stereo amp, righ? Are you using lots of cabs, or doing a output saturation/hot plate/fx/stereo out kinda thing?

For less-expensive alternatives to "real" guitar-amp tolex, try yourautotrim.com. I got the blue vinyls for my Phony-Vox combo (see link in signature) from them. The "Oxen" line of seating vinyls is what I used - it has the right weight & stretchability for amp covering. If you see something else you like, check the the folks there - they are very helpful and can tell you which other products will work like Oxen does.

i kow you said bolts, but im guessing they have to be long to get the nuts so instead of standard nuts, use t nuts. wont have clearance issues.

Re: rack project in construction, PICS!!!

wow, that's gonna weigh a f*ckzillion pounds.

Somewhere in Chi-Town a Chiropractor now has no doubt that not only is he going to be able to put his kid through an ivy league school, but he can go ahead and pull the trigger on a boat as well.

Re: rack project in construction, PICS!!!

Heavy was my first thought. I would have bought a flight case for the head of built a seperate rack for it.

Cool project though.

it'll actually be pretty simple for a rack setup...i'll only be running one of the amps at a time, but i'll always have both with me when we're out on the road. the jmp-1/ 20/20 combo will be used most in smaller venues where you can't turn up as loud, and for recording. the dual rectifier can cover larger shows, and either amp will be there if the other fails. the band is going out on the road this summer, and the thought of not having a backup just worries me.

and even though it's gonna be damn heavy, it'll be more convenient for me to have it all in the same package. i'd rather have a bandmate just grab a side and only have to make one trip, than to have it all in a sperate box.

hopefully if i'm done soon, i'll get some more pics up. but for the next few days i'll be at work all day...but hey, that 20/20 and jmp ain't free :D

Re: rack project in construction, PICS!!!

Hehe... rack rigs kickass! I'd personally kill for a triaxis/2:90 setup. Can't wait to see finished pics!

Re: rack project in construction, PICS!!!

Naw Rob, don't worry. You're rack is too big/frivolous, and your cabinets are puny :p.
