Ready for my first tube amp. Too many choices!

Re: Ready for my first tube amp. Too many choices!

yea, I'm living vicariously through you, dude. We're one-income with two kids, so I can't have nothin' cool ever ever ever or my wife will bust me in the face.

Haha so sorry about the wife! I'm actually really interested in buying the behringer though, that's cheap enough to buy a nice head to go with it. I just hope it'll fit in my little civic... lol

Boy I wish, what's your price partner?

Re: Ready for my first tube amp. Too many choices!

I think I had picked up my '69 Super Reverb for around $6-700. Of course, it needed some loving like a new cabinet, tubes, changing the silverface balance bias setup, etc. It isn't compact, but there's nothing quite like the punch of 10'' speakers and 4 of them will definitely cover a pretty large space. Well worth the money in my mind (at least until silverface prices become coveted like the blackface, brown and tweed stuff).

Peavey Classic amps are a really great bang for the buck. Heck, I think the Classic 50 sounds better than a lot of the boutique stuff out there. You'll get more mids out of a Peavey than you will a Fender Deville, but I don't know how well Peavey amps take pedals and I know Fenders eat them up.

If you dig the way it sounds, buy it. Don't spend your time online endlessly researching stuff because all you'll do is end up in circles (and you'll never find people to agree on a single amp so don't bother). Take this from a guy who has chased tone for longer than I'd care to admit.

The whole 30W vs 50W or even 50W vs 100W is a bit of a myth. With speakers able to handle the wattage, 100W is only 3db louder than 50W. In order to get double the actual volume, you'd need 500W.

Hate to be that "actually...it's this way" guy, but this is almost correct. You would need 500W for double the decibels. But decibels work on a logarithmic scale. Here's a graph of the function:

The difference between just 90 dB and 93 dB is HUGE, and the difference in sound pressure between those few decibels only increases more and more the louder you are. 110 dB vs. 116 dB is an incredible difference. The sound pressure for 110 dB is 6.32455532 Pa, according to this calculator, while 116 dB is 12.61914689 Pa. It's a difference of only 6 decibels, but the sound pressure had doubled, and sound intensity had almost quadrupled (0.1 W/m^2 vs. 0.3981 W/m^2).

So there is currently a vintage 50 2x12 with two aftermarket celestion vintage 30's in my area for 450, can I have a second opinion on this? Sounds like a good deal to me! The only thing I worry about is what are the repercussions of putting 30 watt speakers into a 50 watt amp? sorry if that's a silly question

On top of all this is the fact that those perceived differences are through the same speaker array...so a different array with different efficiency ratings will act accordingly. In simple terms, a 50 watt amp run through four speakers with 103db ratings will be louder than a 100 watt amp run through 4 speakers with 96db ratings.

To get back to the topic at hand...OP, go and get that Peavey C-50. They take pedals like a champ, and also, don't let anyone fool you about the Blue Marvel speakers...they're more than good enough to rock out with.

True. My previous post was implying that the given decibel ratings would be through the same exact setup.

Great amp. I have a Classic 30 and run it through a 212 closed back cabinet. Takes pedals extremely well. Cleans do start to break up at higher volumes, but your 50 watt will have plenty of headroom. Let us know how you like it.
