Reb Beach in Whitesnake?

I saw the DVD and was surprised he was there... or was he? I swear it was him with his signature suhr and a wall of Marshalls.

Doug Aldrich is awesome! IMO, he's got the better tone.

Re: Reb Beach in Whitesnake?

Doug completely overshadows Reb on the DVD. Doug's tone is very much Whitesnake...and he does a fantastic job paying tribute to John Sykes.

IMHO, Reb is the peg that doesn't fit in the band. His tone is perfect for Winger, but simply wrong for WS. Thankfully, Doug is so good that Reb can play a back seat in the band and simply churn on chords...play a few solos that require some silly trem action...and let Doug do all the heavy lifting.

Re: Reb Beach in Whitesnake?

That was my impression too.

I'm not saying though that Doug Aldrich is better than Reb Beach, because I love Reb's work on winger and very impressed with his instrumental "Black Magic"... but yeah, in Whitesnake, Doug was awesome!

I looked at his new website to find out about his gear but there were no descriptions just yet. Looks like some JCM800s. I wonder what are his pickups on the Black LP Custom and Goldtop?

Re: Reb Beach in Whitesnake?

Doug is better than Reb!
I've seen Doug playing for Dio and WS. Effortless sherddery. Reb was great too with WS but Doug stole the show. Then the Scorps stole the show from WS... just wish Uli was still with them. ... " 'Cause I'm in a traaaa-aa-aance!"

black LP= duncan 59 neck and suhr ssh+ bridge
gold LP= was a duncan at the time now a custom wind from john suhr and a suhr ssh+ in the bridge

in his black strat he has duncan classic stacks with alnico V magnets(call MJ) and duncan holdsworth in the bridge

his gold strat has a lil 59 in the neck and a holdsworth in the bridge

the info comes from the man himself on his forum.

that said doug has SICK, SICK tone and just fits whitesnake to a T. reb is a killer guitar player but in whitesnake he is in the back seat with doug behind the wheel

Re: Reb Beach in Whitesnake?

as far as amps he has and uses a "cameron" moded marshall jmp for leads
and a "bradshaw/suhr" moded marshall for crunch and most of the whitesnake stuff in dio he was using the "cameron" marshall more he uses alot of fulltone pedals when needed octafuzz/dejavibe/FDII/fat boost he uses a rackmount wah as well. hope it helps. later scott

Re: Reb Beach in Whitesnake?

John Sykes = Whitesnake. I think he got shafted while the world watched Adrian Vandenburg & Vivian Campbell pretend to play his music in the videos.

John Sykes literally played the majority of one album....Whitesnake s/t. Thats it. He's credited as a guitarist on slide it in, but IIRC, he played only one solo of one song. Ironic that on the s/t album, he played everything but one solo of one song...

Regardless, I disagree with such a presumption of Sykes=Whitesnake. Coverdale runs the show in the band...it's been that way since he formed it. Sykes was a part of it for literally one album and one tour....to say he's the band is sorta like saying Gary Cherone = Van Halen.

However, having said all of that...the current lineup of Whitesnake, I feel, is the band's most comfortable lineup. Both Reb and Doug are blusy enough to handle all the Moody/Marsden stuff (pre-Sykes)...Doug and Reb handle the Vai stuff from SOTT extremely well...and Doug does a simply fantastic job of handling the Sykes stuff from s/t.

I think Doug's approach to the soloing, especially the Sykes stuff, is to pay strict tribute to John's work, while tastefully injecting a little bit of himself in it. I've never seen a replacement guitarist do a better job of really capturing the vibe of someone prior, the way Doug is doing...

I would agree with this, if Van Halen III was their best selling album. Saying Steve Vai = Whitesnake is like saying Gary Cherone = Van Halen. Whitesnake is obviously Coverdale's band, but Sykes was the musician that gave him his biggest success.

thanks!

we have to give reb some credit by taking the back seat to doug... kinda reminds me of viv campbell to phil collen.

Re: Reb Beach in Whitesnake?

ive never listened to much whitesnake, but doug was amazing on the latest dio live album/DVD

Listen, I'm a huge John Sykes fan...so the last thing I want to do is not give him the credit where credit is due. John's work on s/t is really what I use to measure up all other rock music...but, read up on John's comments regarding the recording of the album. When he started, he was searching for a different sound...and he enlisted the help of Bob Rock (who was recording someone else in the same studio) to achieve the sound. John didn't do it all on his own...The production of the album has alot to do with how it sounds...

Also, The keep in mind that the only major hit penned by Sykes was In The Still Of the Night....but it wasn't the hit that broke s/t completely loose. That was Here I Go Again....which was *not* written by Sykes and is a remake of a previous Whitesnake recording. Here I Go Again doesn't get released, and Is This Love doesn't get released....same for Give Me All Your Love Tonight....

Whitesnake has existed FAR before Sykes and long after Sykes. You're viewing the s/t album as the be all end all of Whitesnake....and only in the US was Whitesnake a huge success surrounding the s/t album. In europe, especially england, Whitesnake enjoyed large success prior to Sykes joining the band.

Today, the Aldrich/beech Whitesnake is in massive demand in europe and asia...and I suspect if the dreadful musical climate that was started by a Seatle heroin addict finally shifts back towards riff-based guitar work...you will see Whitesnake enjoy large success here again.

Keep in mind that Sykes was fired before significant recording of s/t actually started. His mindset was that if he didn't finish the album, someone else would have...so he stayed and did so anyway.

Re: Reb Beach in Whitesnake?

Saw them just recently, and saw Aldrich with Dio. Aldrich was just a monster each time... really great fun to watch.

Re: Reb Beach in Whitesnake?

Never heard of Doug.... I have not seen the new Whitesnake line up.. I have heard of Reb... I used to love Seventeen by Winger as kid in Highschool in the 80's... i still have that tape around here somewhere!
