Recommend me an amp that fits....

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

Yep, I keep reading your description of what you need, including the dual clean tones and a Triaxis w/JJs and a 2:90 with JJs and EL34s in the outer slots would nail it.

Bummer about the boycott.

My clean tone is the diametric opposite of my Distorted tone: ice cold, distant, eerie and totally devoid of any distortion.... like a huge cave with a distant drum beat that ´s almost pitch black as far as lighting goes, or even the same beat in space.... You´ll hear it if we ever sell enough EPs to release the album, lol :laugh2:

Have you considered adding a JC-120 to your rig?

Or a solid state preamp direct into the house mixer?

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

Didn't read all the posts, but I'll offer my 2 cents...

For stop on a dime, tight, punchy metal, the Powerball and Fireball tend to be the definate reigning kings. That said, even an amp like a Dual Recto can be made tight as ****, as demonstrated on Chaosphere, None, DEI (IIRC, at least), etc...

The XXX will get you your old tone, I believe. It'll be tighter than Mesa and have more of a crunchy, signature Peavey tone, but it'll definately get you in the ballpark.

VHT's are also EXTREMELY tight, but might be too dry for your tastes. I definately couldn't play one as a rhythm only amp, but the lead tone is ****ing insane.

I haven't been all that impressed with the Framus tones I've been hearing lately, even though I used to rave about them... Really dark in nature, and really thick, but they sound kind of sterile. It's like a darker voiced, more harmonically complex sounding 5150, with more balls and low-mids and less of a chainsaw hi-mid/high end, but it still sounds sterile. I'd say it's not worth the price they charge over here at all (2400 USD new, 1700 used).

I'll (hopefully) be trying out a JSX tomorrow, so I'll let you know how that goes. From what I've heard, read, been told, etc, they're like the best sounding 5150 and XXX. Voiced a bit better, tighter, more versatile, and richer in tone. I have high hopes for this amp, and am actually considering it as a replacement for the Single, but there are other candidates (whole different story).

I'll be hitting a couple boutique/high end/cool guitar shops tomorrow (I'm in NYC/Boston for the week, Ben (Twighlight Odyssey) knows of some killer places), and I'll definately share my results.

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

Heard a few bands come through here on tour using the krankenstein, and wasn't horribly impressed. Tone was a little on the harsh side, but I couldn't see inside the amp to see if they had replaced the crap stock tubes either ;).

That said, I love my revolution to death. Put some good tubes in there and the f***er rocks...anybody who needs any more gain is a madman.

And why are you boycotting? i dont understand

Google "Ruby Tubes" and "Paul Ruby Amplification" and you´ll understand the boycot of Ruby Tubes / Magic parts products. This automatically extends to any product using Ruby Tubes products in their construction, in this case Mesa using their matching system (AFAIK in addition to their own but that´s beside the point)

I love Jackson, but won´t touch a PC1 becasue they´re factory loaded with Dimarzios and that´s the same in the end as buying the Dimarzios... and (unfortunately) this is no different....

Daisy: I´m lugging around too much gear as it is already, though I´d love to get a JC at some point.....

Unfortunately, a preamp and house mixer aren´t even a reliable backup solution for the same reasons that I need 2x50 watts in the first place ;)

I don't get it...

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

Well, imagine getting sued for being called Marcel... that´s what it essentially boils down to ;)

Bottom line: I don´t support companies whose business practices suck, nor do I purchase products from other companies that contain anything from these companies if at all possible, because otherwise the first part becomes a Joke. "I won´t buy Dimarzios" and then turning around and buying a Guitar that has Dimarzios from the factory IS buying Dimarzios, just with one extra corner in the trip so you can lie to yourself.

And here, buying a mesa Amplifier amounts to money in Ruby´s pocket as well in the exact same way. No, plain and simple.

Now, can I please stop having to explain WHY I want a different rig and get some more suggestions on WHAT, please? Otherwise the thread has served it´s purpose and can (will) be nuked.... ;)

No offense intended, it´s just that his is the 4th time in this thread alone, and it´s not exactly a new development, but is more like a year overdue... And this is the whole reason I didn´t elaborate in the original post, it´s not in any way productive or important to the thread and the information is easily and readily available to anyone that knows how to search ;)

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

Count this as another JSX suggestion. I played my Jackson through one about a month ago and fell in love. As mentioned, it takes a bit of dialing in, but once you do I think you'll love it. Unless something magically appears that makes me change my mind, I'll probably be getting one near the end of the year. I've got some guitar stuff to take care of first or I'd already be working on getting it.

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

I concur, the JSX is very nice and the tone stack is very useable. The onboard noisegate is kinda crazy. The JSX eats up the hotter pups too, whether active or passive.

D!ck and I played a Krankenstein and it had a LOT of gain very very very tight I thought, the clean could do that cold thing you describe too. Thing is that you get a definite Pantera vibe from it, that gritty trebly distortion.

If you wanna wait though.....pick up an old 2210 and have Jeff build you exactly what you want. I'm sure you saw my thread and how well thought out his designs are. If you don't want to do a head how about getting Jeff to rebuild a Marshall 100/100 power amp and put in the preamp of your choice?

One more thing I just thought of, have you looked at the Splawns Pro Mod? 120 Watts, and you can upgrade to KT88s for even more bass. 3 gears, and I'm sure you could tell Scott what you're looking for and he could at least tell you if his amps would fit the bill.

Hope that helps man.

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

Being totally taken with my Engl, I would suggest a Powerball, an SE (which has midi capabilities) or wait a few months for the invader. Altermatively, Engl does some top notch rack gear -

e570_1.jpg

The universe of sound built in two rack units, improved for the next generation of ambitious guitar players: The preamp section of the famous E 670 head. 6 basic sounds and 8 switchable soundoptions to store in 128 Midi presets. From Crystal clean through smooth Jazz, from Texas crunch to pounding Rock, from fat Metal- Punch rhythm to screaming Leads. Get ready to Rack ’n’ Roll.
4 channels: Clean, Crunch, Lead 1, Lead 2, each one in modern or classic mode, 3band EQ for Clean/Crunch channel plus Crunch treble, 3band EQ for Lead 1/Lead 2 channel plus Lead 2 treble, Contour, Bright, Ultra Bright, Mid Edge, Mega Low Punch, noise gate, stereo fx loop (serial) 5 x ECC 83
preamp tubes.

e950_100_1.jpg

The new standard in rack power amplification. The 950/100 is the new kid in town. 100 watts per side: more power, more dynamics and sonic punch in conjunction with innovative
player’s features. The best match for the 580/570 preamps, full MIDI switchable. Stereo dual looper plus stereo fx loop to switch between 2 different preamps and one fx unit on/off the signal chain per MIDI. ECS tube protection. The new SCC (Speaker Connect Check) will check if there are actually speakers
connected otherwise the amp will standby. Hi/Lo power switch from 100 to 50 watts per MIDI to preserve the headroom for clean sounds – switchable at a glance. The new 950/100 is the perfect solution for high class rack amplification.

WOW!

I guess that fits the bill REALLY well.

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

Regarding the boycott: http://ravenphpscripts.com/article287.html

As for the Splawns I own one and love it, but it's clean channel is just like most channel switching Marshalls in that you'll want a lower output pup with the volume rolled off a bit to get truly clean.

Zerb, sounds like you need to visit Rienhold Bogner.:smokin:

Wow, that rack Engl sure looks sweet.

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

Try out a Koch Powertone. I've heard lots of good stuff about them, and I play a Twintone myself which is nice. I'd recommend you to try it out as well, but I'm not sure if it has enough gain for you. Enough for me to play Hypocrisy, but maybe not for you. The Powertone should be more metal.

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

you should buy a FRAMUS RUBY RIOT. It might not suit your needs/ fit your style but you can take your boycott further and buy an amp with the word 'ruby' in the name.

serious note: the engl se rack seems perfect

Re: Recommend me an amp that fits....

Why not replace the v-twin with another pedal/pre amp? And is the Marshall on your black list now also?

If you are just getting rid of the v-twin then I would recommend a Koch pedaltone, that thing has awesome features and Koch = Unholy tone.

For an amp head I would recommend a Koch Multitone (6l6) or Powertone II (el34), I only have experience playing through a Multi tone but the Powertone ripped my head clean off when I heard it for the first time! Soooo rude!
An Bogner ecstacy would have not enough gain for your tastes on it's own, but it will do anything else better than any other amp out there.
An Ubershall would suit you perfectly, I've heard it do lower gain stuff too and it rocks hard! Bogners are not one trick pony's!

There is also this Italian company called Brunetti, I've never heard their amps but they are high gain and made in Modena which is the hometown of Ferrari! That has to mean something ;).

Looking for something cheaper: London City Bulldog, best value on the market right now. Sounds pretty good!

No, but a 50 watt marshall head has a big problem putting out 100 watts, much less more...

...and it instantly revives the pedal issue... Otherwise an SFX-03 would have also been an option.. I don´t have time to concentrate on stupid tapdance routines live, and am not even going to start in that direction by reintroducing pedals to my live rig.... Even the V-twin pedal was merely an emergency backup solution that I´m gald I never really had to use ;)

Brunetti + Koch, noted... Thx ;)

I don´t buy cheap. I either buy top notch quality that I know I can trust, or I don´t buy anything at all and live with what I have... That´s why there haven´t been any "Zerb acquisition" threads in over a year .. still might be something to look into, though...;)

I say use 2 heads, one for clean and one for gain. :)
Great solution when you have someone to lug for you...

....But 3 10 Space racks, 2 keyboards, 5 guitars and 2 2x12s are already a ****load more than my Back should handle ;)

Not to mention that I then have to purchase TWO new amps because the entire reason for the thread still exists and the problem is nowhere near alleviated by this solution :eek13: ;)
