Rectifier tube that sounds between rectifier/ silicone diode for Mesa

Actually (splitting hairs now) the "Dual" in Dual Rectifier comes from the number of rectifier tubes. They're not counting the silicon diode. :) That's why the 100-watt Dual Rec runs on two 5U4-Gs, the 50-watt Single Rec runs on one, and the 150-watt Triple rec runs on three.

my bad. :smack: I was mostly trying to point out that both the tubes and the silicone diode are there for 'rectifying', and trying to relay my bad experience with the gz34s. Next time I should sick my head inside the different amps before I try to sound like an expert on Mesa's naming convention. :duh:

Hey Klink, I have been considering getting my Mesa Voodoo modded, and even talked to Trace about what upgrades would need to be done to my T-Verb before he would work on it, but it seems like even after your mod you are still trying a bunch of different tubes/speakers/pups/beam blockers etc. Would you not recommend the Voodoo Dual Rectifier mod or is there just some specific tone that is eluding you?

What tubes were you using? Maybe it wasnt biased for those tubes...

The suggested Mesas. The tech said that the bias mod wasn't done properly and it burned up the entire bias section along with two of the power tubes :(

Definateley have it Voodoo modded. I am very happy with the mod. I have found that My major dislike was the Vintage 30s I had. I took 2 of them out thinking it did the trick but the annoying frequencies were still there. So I went thru alot of pickup, tube trials. I just bought 2 governors and now the frequencies are gone and I am in tone heaven. The tube changes were just experimenting to get the best highs, mids and lows I could the mixture of GT6CA7 and EH6CA7 from Dougs tubes did the trick . I went about 15 years of playing the same 5150 and Marshall cab and just over the past year or so I have been trying to get the sound in my head. Voodoo helped the most. I am about done now as you can see by my number of questions compared to a year ago. I will be getting a Voodoo cab soon as well as I took my Mesa cab to New York and compared it to the Voodoo and the Voodoo smoked it. I will keep 2 cabs with all Eminence except for 2 g12k100 Celestion speakers on the bottom of one cab. Finally I am in TONE HEAVEN. Try the Voodoo cords also. I have them in every position in my rack, speaker cables, guitar , Microphone. Tell Trace Rob sent you and to get the same Mods I have and you wont be dissapointed.

No big - If you ever catch me talking out of my ass please do me the pleasure of asking me to remove my head from it. :)

(not implying that that's what you were doing but, ah, you get the idea)

cool, thanks man. I love the DR mod clips on the Voodoo site, and Trace was great to deal with. He took the time to lay out in detail fixes for some inherent design flaws in the T-Verb, even though I was only some random emailer who happened to stumble across his site. I have had a local tech do the work already and am looking forward to a trip to central NY sometime this summer.

Re: Rectifier tube that sounds between rectifier/ silicone diode for Mesa

I had installed dual internal pots in my Tremoverb years ago..I had a pot for each of the set of tubes(EL34s or 6L6)....On mine,I'd just move the switch to either EL34s or the 6L6s and pop in the tubes..Both pots were already setup and biased for whatever tube brand I'd set the bias for...Not having a adjustable bias is still stupid to me,especially if you're a guy like me that owns several different styles of tubes.... :smack:

I just thought say a couple of things regarding this amp. I have a Tremoverb as well, which I hated because of it's distortion qualities and the extremely overly compressed sound that is associated with this amp. I decided to mod this amp by Voodoo amps with. A mercury magnetics output transformer and the deluxe mod they do. It restructures the gain on the amp and just makes it a lot more usable. You can turn up the gain a great deal and not have it get buzzy and fizzy sounding, just a nice even sound all the way up. Very smooth. But one critical thing that I also did to this amp was to also include dual bias pots for EL34's&6L6's.This is a must as far as I'm concerned. Biasing it for TAD 6L6's STR's. Before this whole mod, I took Eurotubes advice and bought into this idea of using the KT 77&6V6 combination they suggest. Without the mod I used this complement along with GZ34 rectifier tubes. Plugged everything in and popped the fuse three times. Now in my mind, if you start popping fuses, you may very well run into some major problems of possibly blowing up your amp. Once I got the mod done and the dual bias pots done only then could I bias the amp properly. Nothing blowing up now. Biasing to 60% of maximum dissipation is what I did. Not a good idea in my opinion to use GZ34 rectifier without being able to bias the tubes to their proper parameter. As far as all of these uneducated people putting in their two cents on biasing. They should actually know the facts about electronics and exactly how these amps really work. I have worked on several amps through the years with good results. I hope I've offered some good advice here on the Tremoverb. Get the mod though, it's worth it if you really want to keep this amp.
