Rickenbacker 650 - help!

Newbie here, hoping someone can provide insight, if not a solution to my problem.

Will a Seymour Duncan SRB1-n, intended as a replacement for a Rickenbacker bass neck pickup, also work in a Rickenbacker 650? Both instruments are built with the same humbucker, Ric's HB1. So if it drops into the bass, shouldn't it drop into the guitar as well? Or would there be a sonic incompatibility?

Here's why I'm asking. The neck pickup in my 650 Colorado all but died. Even in my loudest amp, cranked to 10, it was barely audible. Bridge pickup, also an HB1, sounds fine.

Easiest fix, I figured, was to buy a new HB1. I found about a dozen online dealers of Ric parts, all of whom are out of stock. Rickenbacker itself is also out of stock. The best Ric corporate can tell me is to check back mid-July, when everybody returns from summer break. No guarantees, however, that the HB1 will be in stock then. Other online parts dealers say the same thing -- maybe mid-July, maybe not, we'll see.

In case that doesn't pan out, I see three viable options:
1) Replace the HB1 with another Ric pup. They're all interchangeable, and the other models are readily available. Some 650 players have subbed toasters for the HB1s.
2) Replace it with a a non-Ric pup. However, the only HB1 replacements I found are intended for basses -- Duncan and Joe Barden, namely.
3) Have the bad pup rewound.

I have ruled out eBay/Craigslist/etc. -- one too many bad experiences.

Any experience with either of these scenarios? All insight appreciated.

Welcome to the forum

I thought all Ric pickups were interchangeable, but the toaster neck pickup in my 4001 is larger and different from all the singles in my 420-12, my 320, and my 330-12.

Contact the Duncan Custom Shop. They do have a couple alternative solutions for Rickenbacker guitars, but you need to talk to them.

Wiring in Rics can get dodgy. I guess you have checked all your wiring and pots already?

beaubrummels: Good to know that not all Ric pups are necessarily "interchangeable."
As for the Custom Shop, I'd hoped to keep everything simple and "off the shelf."

hydro: Yes, I'd hoped it would be something as simple as a loose solder joint or pot gone bad, but they all test fine. The magnet also seems OK. My best guess is a loose wire inside the housing. How it happened after a year-plus of working fine, I have no idea.

I would look into getting it rewound... you don't have anything to lose... not like it can get any more broken.
