close one for sure!
I like the old grimy sludgy sound of stokholm one, but the chumble spuzz one was clean AND nasty, just like I like em . . . clean and nasty!

Re: Riff-Off 2.4: Stockholm Syndrome vs. Chumble Spuzz

Upon first listen both riffs seem cluttered with unnecessary fluff.

Stockholm's distorted tone is downright offensive. Each time I've listened to it I wish it faded in or somehow prepared me for the dirty, flubby, fizzy, lazy, plodding, annoyingness.

Chumble's instantly sounds like a riff Iron Maiden would have thrown away in about 1984. The delay is a little distracting and the crunchy payoff seems cliche and makes me say "really? Are you serious?"

Having said all that, and after a few more listens, my ears start to sort through the fluff and get to the riffage.

Stockholm's does seem to have a cool, almost classic rock vibe about it. It sounds like an intro to an Alice in Chains or Smashing Pumpkins song. It's not bad, but to me ears it sounds like a prelude to the real riff which should immediately follow.

Chumble's riff is more ambitious and attempts to deliver a variety of emotions. My favorite part of it is the dramatic pauses after the first few bars. This is presumably done to let the echo ring out but it's also a great contrast to the crunch that immediately follows.

I'd love to hear each of these with the effects and fuzz stripped away but in the end I think I have to go with Chumble.

tied up again 14-14 at this point.

Re: Riff-Off 2.4: Stockholm Syndrome vs. Chumble Spuzz

Wow, two great entries for sure !!! I listened a few times and i feel that both riffs have a 'vision' to them, and both make me feel like i'm listening to a song rather than just a riff, which i think is probably a big credit to our riffmesters.

Ignoring sound and recording quality, and performance quality, one riff spoke more to my sensibilities and my desire to hear things 'outside the box', so it got my vote. But both felt very focused and solid, like direct, confident statements rather than vague concepts. These are good things in my book.

Congratulations to both, you've made this a great final and it's been a joy to listen. Rock on !

Re: Riff-Off 2.4: Stockholm Syndrome vs. Chumble Spuzz

went with chumble. I liked the idea of stock using bass (at least I think it's a bass guitar), but it's just too distorted for me to grab on to.

Re: Riff-Off 2.4: Stockholm Syndrome vs. Chumble Spuzz

Great work, guys!

I'm not a fuzz fan, yet after listening a couple of times Stockholm's riff really stood out.

Chumble's lick grabbed me immediately. I like the contrast of the muted, staccato lick with the distorted response.

Tough call.

Re: Riff-Off 2.4: Stockholm Syndrome vs. Chumble Spuzz

cast my vote. i really liked both riffs in this round

Re: Riff-Off 2.4: Stockholm Syndrome vs. Chumble Spuzz

I dug Stock's grimy blown-speaker tone, as well as the groove he laid down with it. Both fit each other very well.

Chumble's use of delay and emptiness was excellent, but I felt Stock had the stronger, more-easily-identifiable-with riff.

I like these close ones...unless I'm in one.:lmao:

Still, to quote Mr. Wonka "The suspense is killing me...I hope it lasts!! "

wild how this one has been neck and neck with the lead changing hands a few times
very atypical

Re: Riff-Off 2.4: Stockholm Syndrome vs. Chumble Spuzz

i am hearing some strange volume drop outs or pumping or somesuch in chumble's .. just me?

I heard the volume drop momentarily when the picking stopped and the delay repeats still lingered. I figure that's supposed to happen.

Re: Riff-Off 2.4: Stockholm Syndrome vs. Chumble Spuzz

I have to say - just being honest - I was not really a fan of either of these.

Stockholm - To much of the Same Old Song And Dance to me.
Cumble - Too disjoint, not grooving.

Interesting yes, but I just can't dance to either. I have decided how to cast my vote though.

Re: Riff-Off 2.4: Stockholm Syndrome vs. Chumble Spuzz

I think both contestants have proved to deliver more ear-pleasing (for me) contributions in earlier rounds.

SS had some cool QOTSA-riffage though. However, although I like the idea for the sound, it was just too much of it. More buttered up, and I would be really digging this - especially with a groove behind there. So the idea is indeed good, the execution could be better, but it's not bad at all.

CS's contribution.. well, I don't know what to say. The style is far away from my heart, so I am sorry.. no fan. But I can totally see others digging this, of course. Just not my tea cup, as simple as that..

To end: thanks to both for excellent musicianship throughout the rounds!

Re: Riff-Off 2.4: Stockholm Syndrome vs. Chumble Spuzz

It's 25-24 now.

Is it to early to discuss what we do in case there's a tie?

Re: Riff-Off 2.4: Stockholm Syndrome vs. Chumble Spuzz

Well, the fuzz turned me off at first (since I am listening on crappy laptop speakers it was hard to hear the actual riff)
But, after a few listens, I like it, kinda laid back, waiting to grab you.
the second, was interesting. I thought there was ALMOST too much air to it, though I liked the pauses. Could really hear it going into a huge song though.

So after looking past recording quality etc, I voted
And made it 25-25!

Re: Riff-Off 2.4: Stockholm Syndrome vs. Chumble Spuzz

Sweet!

I would not like to be either of these guys at the moment.
