Santana tone...amp and pickup wise what will get it?

Im talking about the tone he gets on his older stuff, not that his newer tone is anything to sneeze at though. But mainly on stuff like his version of "Shes not there" and Black Magic Woman.

What sort of amp would he have been running with what pedals etc.

From the present run-up, it's most definitely the Mesa Mk I

In the Early days of Santana he used a early 60' LP and a SG special. He used Fender twin amps, and Acoustic Amps. Check out the video of Santana playing Soul Sacrifice Live at Woodstock. SG special thru an Acoustic Amp!

Yeah, SG Special with P90s into a Twin. I just tried a Historic SG Special, P90s and a wrap bridge. I think I'm damaged for other guitars now. What a sound.

Also wire your guitar to the spects that Gibson used on there guitars of the era. A friend did this for me and man it makes a difference.

Perhaps he means the pot values & caps? Actually, perhaps the '60s gibson mod' or whatever it is, the way the tone is placed with the vol control in the circuit is different. I remmeber it being dicussed a while back on this board. Sorry I'm fuzzy on it but someone else should know more.

Re: Santana tone...amp and pickup wise what will get it?

I have been a Santana fan for years. He started using the Boogie apparantly with the Abraxas album. I had always assumed he had used HB pu's but when you listen to his earlier stuff it definitely has more of an edge to it than his more recent stuff. Last year I got some custom shop phat cats and they really seemed to get close to the older Santana stuff. Here is a clip I did with them in my prs hollowbody through my MKII. The tone is close but still not the Samba Pa Ti tone. He has been somewhat elusive as to what it was recorded on (maybe he doesn't remember). I did play an old twin once and that actually was as close as I have heard to the original (or at least as I can recall.)

A good set neck short scaled guitar with a killer neck humbucker.. tube amp with gain low and volume cranked to get the speaker to move.. and the tubes to start getting hot! That should do it ! Any Good Gibson LP studio, SG, etc..
