I have used a lot of different greenback varieties

vintage celestions, modern celestions (both english and chinese), the various gb eminence speakers, the weber 1225, the weber legacy, and the scumback (which was originally made by weber, and basically the legacy line is that scumback speaker) each offer their own subtle nuances

right now I have a Legacy 10" 30 watter in my open back orange 15 watt class a combo and a Legacy 12" 30 watter with a 55 hz cone and 30 oz magnet in an orange extension cab.

these were a tremendous improvement over the stock celestion vintage 30 and celestion g10-40n speakers and they are a huge improvement over the current production celestion greenbacks I've tried in this amp and in others (mostly vox and marshalls).

so for around $100 suggest a better greenback clone than a weber legacy or 1225 that is made to order here in the USA???
keep in mind the following prices
celestion greenback about $125 street (made in china), this isn't one of the heritage versions that's closer to $250
eminence private jack about $95 street (made in usa)
weber 1225 ceramic about $112 street (made in usa)
weber legacy 12 about $122 street (made in usa) *mine was on sale when I got it for $92*
scumbacks about $149-$159 street (made in usa)


the only thing I can think of that is worth mentioning is the Eminence Private Jack and it's mass produced albeit a very very nice speaker I don't like it as well as the legacy or the 1225. Again PJ is a great speaker just my preference I'd be happy with either.

I've been using Weber speakers for many years (started back when Ted was still alive) I don't really understand the hate for Weber speakers they have done fantastic speakers for me and many of my friends, they have great service/support hell they even have done a few recones and they were stellar.

I like being able to get just about any speaker I can dream of at a reasonable price, get them broken in free of charge by request, etc and have them made here in america. Have fun with your mediocre chinese celestions. Something to bear in mind too is that I'm into vintage gear and weber's are more of a vintage speaker. So maybe that's not your thing, but as a decent professional musician you should be able to at least respect and admit that even products you might not personally commit to or endorse are still quality products capable of producing professional results it just didn't meet your personal criteria

So obviously they are very diff in a closed 4x12.. Cool! Thanks for the info! Would you say then that Id have better tone from my 1 x12 combo with a G1230 type?

Anyone familiar with Carvin's BR 4x12 cab?? I have one of those with their british series speakers and have always been curious if a speaker upgrade to 4 greenbacks (or Private Jacks) would wake it up..??

The Greenback is a first rate, high quality speaker with a very distinctive tone.

But to answer your question: YES!

In a 1 x 12 combo amp (like the Deluxe Reverbs I use for example) the G12H30 sounds even better than the Greenback.

But the Greenback never sounds bad...it's to good of a speaker to ever sound "bad".

The one that uses the wrong frame?

I can't keep up with what version Weber wants to claim Ted came up with this month.

I apologize for even bringing it up in Greg's thread.

Scumback offers the best take on vintage Celestions. but as you mentioned can not be had new for $100.

I would stick with G12M reissues if my budget was $100 or less.

I thought I would bump this with an update after spending plenty of time getting to know the 25 watt Greenback I purchased. Like I mentioned before I picked it up used and it is one of the Chinese ones.

I have had it in my Silvertone 1482 and I can't even begin to describe how wonderful it sounds in there. It does NOT change the 1482 per se, but it almost seems as if it perfectly remedies the couple of faults with the stock speaker. I was worried it would add too much headroom, too much bass, but it didn't. It is nothing short of perfect in this amp.

Now then...I put this same speaker in the 1x12 cab I had made for my Magnatone 213 clone and it sounds like complete poo-poo through that amp. Everything about it in the 213 is awful.

It really is interesting how different amp and speakers react to one another.
