do you think there would be much effect on the tone? and if so what kind of difference?

I don't think most players would notice any difference at all. Those that do say the wax potted version is tighter sounding and has a little less of that whispery "kiss" that some unpotted pickus have. I keep a pot of wax on my work bench and can pot any unpotted pickups for anyone who prefers them potted. Lew
