Re: seth lover with phat cat?
I really like the Phat Cat bridge pickup.
I don't hear it as being as hot as a good paf style humbucker though.
You'll have to find out for yourself but I suspect the Phat Cat will sound a little weaker than a Seth Lover neck humbucker.
I don't like it when the bridge pickup is weaker than the neck pickup. That may or may not be the case with this combo.
You'll probably be the first to find out, so let us know.

well i got the seth lover and dropped it in the guitar within minutes of it being delivered-i have to say that after playing it to death for a couple of days i,m continually impressed with it. i always liked to solo on the neck pup but found playing chords with even a little overdrive resulted in a muddy tone but this is a very articulate pickup. beautiful distinct rythmn tones. i really cant praise it enough, its nailed rock and blues tones i,ve had in my head for years.
as for combining it with a phat cat in the bridge i have to reserve judgement- the 2 pickups individually sound great but so different that there is no middle ground between them. its hard to find settings that suit them both or do them both justice. i wouldn,t want to alter the seth lover but the phat cat in the bridge could afford to lose a little treble and still retain its power and bite so i think a magnet change in that should help to even things out.
i have to say tho that even with the imbalance between the 2 pups the combination has made a guitar that is very versatile and a lot of fun to play! i,ll swap those mags and let you know how it works out.
Exactly what I told you would happen. I told you they'd be imbalanced and that the bridge Phatcat would sound weaker than the Seth Lover. But did you listen? No. :lmao:
As for changing magnets in the Phatcat to make it "lose treble", it's an alnico 2 magnet pickup and already as warm as it's going to get. Switching to other magnets will make it brighter - not warmer.
If you've had the Phatcat for less than 21 days, you'll also void your warranty. If you bought the pickup new, and it's 21 days or less old, you can just send it back to the dealer and he/she can swap it for another pickup.
I'd get a bridge model Seth Lover or Custom Custom.
I get the impression that when you say the bridge Phatcat "could afford to lose a little treble" that the real problem is that its output is weaker than the Seth Lover so it doesn't sound full and thick.
Actually, it does sound full and thick - you just need to be comparing it to a NECK Phat cat and not a Seth Lover.
If you were using two Phatcats you could adjust your amp to sound great with both pickups.
It's the imbalance in output that is giving you the impression that the Phatcat needs to lose treble.
You could, of course, send the Seth Lover back (if you bought it from a dealer) and get a neck Phatcat.
You're learning the art of tweaking, that many of us do. Lots of satisfaction in getting your ideal tones by your own hands. Welcome to the club. Lots more to learn, stick around.
Like what? How to void the warranty on his new pickup so he can't exchange it? And what magnet swap is going to give a Phatcat a warmer sound when he's already got the warmest magnets (alnico 2) in there already?
I say: cut your losses. If you can, return the Phatcat and swap it for something you know you already love: another Seth Lover only a bridge model. Or maybe a Custom Custom: the warmest humbucker Duncan makes.
Or swap the Seth for a neck Phatcat.
