Seth vs. Antiquity

I know the differences but I've only had experience with the Seths. What do you guys prefer and why?

Re: Seth vs. Antiquity

I've got them both, but in two different type of guitars. I've got Ants in my Les Paul and the Ants & Seths in my 77 Gibson doubleneck. The Ants seem to be a little pickier and in your face while the Seths are really smooth. They both have that classic sound, but it depends on what classic sound you're looking for as well. They are both great pickups, but the Seths seem to get along with every single amp I own from the Line 6 and Crate Blue Voodoo to the Fender Champ. The Ants seem to like the non-master amps the best and my Carl Martin Plexitone pedal best. Again, it may be the guitars, but that's what I feel about them.

Re: Seth vs. Antiquity

I've got Ants in my LP and Seths in a '61 LP/SG reissue. Both are great sounding. The Ants are a tad warmer/smoother sounding like a real PAF. The Seths have a bit more mid-range, and as I've described before when this question comes up, more of an initial "bite". I prefer Seths with mahogany and Ants with maple top guitars.

If you look on Scott F's website under forum member samples, I've got samples of both. The Ants in the LP and Seths in an all mahogany Hamer Archtop (now in the SG).

Re: Seth vs. Antiquity

Thanks a bunch, guys. That actually makes my decision a little tougher, though. I like the idea of the Seth having more midrange. But I also like the idea of the Antiquities being smoother. I'll give the clip a listen. Thanks again.

Re: Seth vs. Antiquity

Why don't you just stick a ant in the neck and a seth in the bridge, you get fat in the bridge and smooth in the neck

Re: Seth vs. Antiquity

Both are great pickups.

But for my tastes Seths are too cool. The DC resistance values they have are very low.

That might be a good thing. For example if you wanna go with a hot set, an antiquity bridge in the bridge with a seth lover bridge in the neck works great. On the other hand, for a more 57 PAF kinda set seth bridge and antiquity neck is excellent.

Since I do alot of magnet swapping, I prefer antiquities. One of my favorites is my a5 modded ant bridge and a3 modded ant neck.

Why are Antiquities better for magnet swapping?

That's what I hear too. The Ants seem a little smoother and warmer and the Seths seem to have a little more bite although they are very warm and smooth too. It also seems that the Ants have a little more of a hollow character to the mids.

I like them both but the Seth is the one I kept in my Hamer Monoco Super Pro as the neck pickup because it seemed just a little brighter and perhaps just a little clearer.

Both are great pickups!

They're not "better" per se, because you can easily swap magnets in any bar magnet humbucker. It's just that apparently for Doc Barlo's tastes (and a lot of others I've talked to), the Antiquities are very versatile in that they give you a lot of different but good sounds with each Alnico grade, e.g., it gives you 4 different but equally great sounds with Alnico 2, 3, 4 or 5. (They'd probably sound great with Alnico 8 too in my opinion.)

Some pickups seem to sound their best with only one type of magnet.

Re: Seth vs. Antiquity

don't know whya they chose alnico II for those... it might be historically correct but for me it doesn't sound as good as other alnicos

All a matter of taste. IMO, using alnico 2 in a humbucking pickup gives a smoother treble and a less woofy bass response...and more mids. I like alnico 2 HB's, especially for neck pickups, because they tend to have a little less bass and that often makes for a clearer tone for chords with less mud....I can go with alnico 2 or 5 for the bridge pickup.

When it comes to Strat single coils I'm the opposite though: I prefer the bright and deep alnico 5 Strat neck and middle pickups and the warmer. middier alnico 2 for the bridge...:smack: :laugh2:

Re: Seth vs. Antiquity

I have a set of Seths in my ES-137 semi-hollowbody and I had a set of Antiquity HBs in my LP Classic. Compared to the Seths, the Ants were smoother, had a more open midrange but weaker low end, and had much lower output. The Ants ended up being too weak in output and too lacking in high-end bite and low-end thump for my tastes in my LP Classic, so I replaced them with a good ol' set of 59s that work great in this guitar.

I have heard a great sounding LP with Ants in it, and I love the Antiquity I Tele and Strat pickups that I have, but the Antiquity HBs just didn't cut it in my LP. So in my limited experience, I'd go with the Seths and pocket the change.

You know what? I think I kind of agree. I tried both the Seth and the Antiquity and kept the Seth as the neck pickup in my Hamer Monoco. The Seth just seemed livlier and more what I wanted to hear in that guitar.

I Like my neck pickups to stay a bit on the tight and the bright and be articulate so the lows don't flop on me...I find I Like the A4 up there...The bridge position I generally end up with an A2 magnet down there because I want warmer, smoother, slightly more mids, and I Like the sweet "squish" I get on the notes...This would be in my dual humbucker Gibson SG/LP guitars.

You know John, if we're going to totally honest here, I prefer a 7.5K alnico 4 neck humbucker too! But we were talking about Seths and Antiquitys so I didn't mention it. :laugh2:

Ahhhhh my bad Lew....Yes you guys are talking about 2 pickups I've yet to own! :laugh2: :laugh2:

I Know the principals would be the same though..

Not to hijack this thread, but I'm with Lew on this one. The 7.5 Fralin neck is without a doubt my favorite neck humbucker. You need to try it John!
