Seth's or PG's? That is the question.

I've got this sweet little Pelham Blue EPI LP, that's been collecting dust for awhile.

I also have a pair of Seth's and a pair of PG's lying around. I'd prefer the PG's, but the Seth's have chrome covers. I really think the chrome covers will look better in this guitar. So, I wonder how the Seth's will sound in this thang? :scratchch

But I really like the PG's.

If it were my guitar, I'd go with the PGs...but I completely understand wanting them covered.

Re: Seth's or PG's? That is the question.

The chrome covers will alter the tone. And generally not in a good way. This is why guitarists started taking the covers off. Now it's a fad to have covers on because of how they look.

So are you interested in the tone or the looks?

Hmmm... I'd always say go with your ears, but I can't visualize that guitar with black or zebra bobbins - maybe double-whites/creams.

i think double black might be fine with the guard and chip removed which i would probably do anyway

Re: Seth's or PG's? That is the question.

Try the Seth's first. If you like them, then you're set. If you don't, then you can always swap the covers onto the PG's.

Re: Seth's or PG's? That is the question.

Artie, the Duncan Co. doesn't produce chrome-plated covers.

Their covers are nickel-plated. All other possibilities are Custom-Shop only, AFAIK.

HTH,

You're right. The "nkl" in the model number reinforces that. I was kinda using the term "chrome" to imply "shiny". :)

Re: Seth's or PG's? That is the question.

If you can't decide, make a Seth hybrid for the neck. Best neck pickup I've tried.

Re: Seth's or PG's? That is the question.

So many ways to go - none wrong.

When I see Pelham Blue, I just "feel" Seth is the right answer

That said, I do love me some PG's

And regarding the covers, yeah - that's just a cover swap for whatever choice.

The REAL answer here - is actually DOUBLE CREAM. That's the bigger problem. So...I say go PG and cover swap.

DRM - don't know you, so don't take this as an attack, because it isn't - but I don't agree with this at all...we are probably both correct in that various groups of players did/didn't do these things for assorted reasons.

Point by point:

The chrome covers will alter the tone.
- This is debatable. I think the general consensus (and I agree) is that it does. How much is a different issue. I will say so little it doesn't matter in any practical sense. Other s will disagree. Of course, experience may vary depending on the style of music.

And generally not in a good way.
- Again, one man's good way is another man's perfect tonal tweak. Pends on what the guitar and your ears want. I disagree with this statement far more than your first

This is why guitarists started taking the covers off.
- I think this has nothing to do with it. Guitarists started taking the covers off because they wanted the pickups closer to the strings. I'm sure there are all sorts of other reasons; Couldn't solder back on, cheaper to make without, etc...

Now it's a fad to have covers on because of how they look.
- I must have missed this fad, or it is creeping up so slowly I missed it.

So are you interested in the tone or the looks?
- Is there any reason he can't do both?

Personal experience: I took a cover off the bridge to get it closer/hotter. I left the neck cover on because, well, Jimmy Page did it. Again, your mileage may vary. There would be many who say that a PG bridge would benefit tonally from a cover. Perhaps the Seth, not so much.

Re: Seth's or PG's? That is the question.

You could also put a Seth in the neck and PG in the bridge. That always looks cool. And another thing I just wanted to chime in on, you should consider replacing the knobs that control one of the pickups so that it's like Epiphone's Bonamassa Les Paul.
Edit: Just got to thinking, if the PG is too bright in this setup you could switch one of the 500k pots on it to a 300k pot.

Funny you should mention that. I bought this specifically because I didn't want to spend the higher bucks for the Joe B model. :)

Re: Seth's or PG's? That is the question.

I'd pick the Seths all the way in there. But given the choice with Seths and most any pickup, they would win.

Re: Seth's or PG's? That is the question.

The two toned knob setup is actually what convinced me to get the Bonamassa. I was going to get the standard but then I was like "dang, those are some neat knobs" and I started looking into it. The Burstbuckers, of course are what actually sealed the deal.
Edit: I just got to thinking that Burstbuckers 2 and 3 on the Bonamassa are kind of like slightly overwound Seth Lovers. So you have my vote for Seth.
