Should I own a Les Paul?

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

I had no intention to get involved in a "better than" debate.

I was merely listing reasons why Fender's design is often more practical and some feel more comfortable having them. Whether those factors are important to you or not - what the hell do I care? :)

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

Blackmore played a ES335 before the Strat. Interestingly his sound from 1970-1995 goes right back to that sweeter singing sound that I associate with a semi-hollow.

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

Just because someone said propaganda and for no other reason:

if that was recorded with a les paul...

I have not decided whether I will keep the Les Paul or not. I'm actually quite content with my Jaguar through the JCM.

If I do keep the les paul, I will mostly use it in the studio.

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

Yep Blackmore played a Les Paul, as well. Hendrix played several Gibsons. He's mostly known for his Flying Vs, but also a white SG Les Paul Custom, and I've seen many shots of him with other Les Pauls. Had to have been awkward as hell reaching the upper frets, playing them upside down, though.

I have no idea at all what that was recorded with. I had alcohol in my blood, someone said propaganda and I remembered how much I love those guys. I guess I probably thought I was being smart posting a song called This Might Be Satire in response to some of the posts here but I've no idea.

It's just a really cool ****ing song. :friday:

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

I'm surprised any real guitarist has to ask if he should own a Les Paul. Do you really not know? Either you love Les Pauls, or you don't. It's my guitar of choice, and I'm definitely not a Strat guy. You may be the opposite. But you should know one way or the other unless you're just starting out.

Honestly, I think it would benefit any guitarist to own both.

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

I am as Fendery as they come, and I really want a Les Paul.

My compromise days are over. I want a pickup truck and a sports car - not a Subaru Baja.

That's not what I'm getting at. I'm not interested in continuing the Fender v. Gibson debate. You can like one, the other, or both, or neither. My point is that once you've been playing for any length of time, you know what you want.

One day, I went around looking for what guitar I wanted as my ideal guitar. I played everything, and I walked out with a Les Paul. I haven't looked back, and that was the last guitar I bought.

Sure, I get ya. I still prefer to have both, and think that it's better to have more tools in your box. But, if you took away everything but my Gibsons, I'd be good, because when it comes down to it, that's my ideal.

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

blue, with respect, this post is complete BS. we know you love gibsons and hate fenders; you can give the propaganda a break whenever you're ready.

Showing your bias again. This diversion was started by uOpt, promoting the 'benefits' of Fenders over LP's, which spun things off track. Why didn't you talk him about it getting off topic? Fender guy starts it, and you chastise a Gibson guy. Good thinking. Could it be we're getting tired of your fake impartiality and holier-than-thou attitude?

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

I didn't post anything about why Fender/shreder construction is better.

I specifically answered the question "why would some people end up owning no Les Pauls". I was pointing out that there's more to it than a fat sound. Some people just want it practical.

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

No, Astro, in my opinion, you should not own A Les Paul. You should own several. :naughty:

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

I'm definitely picking up a couple of gibsons whenever possible. whether or not I choose to use them live is up to me. :D

I don't think any of the two companies is better.

to me, Fenders with humbuckers bark, Gibsons guitars growl.

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

If Les Pauls are too heavy and you want a "Gibson Growl" (albeit slightly different).....
