Should I own a Les Paul?

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

I have tried 4 or 5 of them over the years. They look great, sound great and look cool.....in other dudes' hands.....not mine!

TELE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

Well, thats really one that noone can answer but you, AZ.. The right LP can be an AMAZING thing, but may not suit you. If you like the scale, weight, shape, layout and having GOBS of sustain.. Then yeah, you should own one. :naughty:

But, if you answer no to any of the above... I mean some guys are more comfy on them and so they play Fenders or Ibanez or....

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

I'd sure like to own one so i could find out as well!!!

My advice sight unseen is.........YES!!!

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

LOL!! As I was typing my post, Bbent said exactly what I was trying to say..

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

Isn't it a requirement that all JCM owners have an LP?

Start with an Agile, $400 is a cheap price to pay to answer your question

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

I like them. Like with any design, there are pros and cons. It does have weight to it, reduces upper fret access, and other things you might not like. In my opinion though, the pros outweigh the cons. The sustain is epic, the tonal range is superb, and it just feels right (specially when played standing up). It's just a full sounding guitar, with character and presence.

Try one. I will have to respectfully disagree with the suggestion to start with a cheap one. The LP design is not one that is made to be simplified or made cheap. It is a design that features high end details (what with the neck angle, body woods, pickups, headstock angle, etc.). Try a few good ones, as you will know what they are about. Check out some standards, traditionals, and some customs. All different flavors.

Hopefully you find something you like.

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

well y'know how you keep spending money on these fenders with humbuckers and trying different humbuckers in them and none of them have enough low-mid growl to really give you the sound you want?

Les Pauls do.

That's why all your new WOW ONE MORE NEW FENDER threads drive me crazy...cuz you'd be way better served by saving up and buying a real guitar.

Think about it man -- your number one guitar is the same model i use as a back-up for my Les Paul Custom.

I actually asked because I am on the verge of receiving a black beauty Epiphone les paul as part of a trade. I've played it before...it was a superb guitar. it was fitted with Burstbucker humbuckers in the bridge and neck.

i loved it, but it weighed a ****ing ton! :eyecrazy:

That's a good starting point. I have not played a ton of epis, but I hear good things about them once the pickups are swapped.

They are heavy (mine is just around 11 pounds I think), but you get used to it after a while. Plug it into a brit flavored EL34 based amp, crank it, and you'll get why the weight is worth it.

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

Is this actually a question?

I'm sold.

this is what's up then:

it was recently refretted.

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

Is that middle pickup crooked, or is it the lighting and shading making it look that way?

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

If it needed refretting, that a good sign because it's probably an older version which I understand are nicer than some of the new ones. The binding also says it's a Custom model which makes it one of the higher end models.

You need to pass through the gates of the Les Paul in order to be an accomplished player collector. Good move.

No, IME the newer ones are better made...

Re: Should I own a Les Paul?

Really? I believe you, but my statement is based on someone else's experience with a older Japanese Epi.

I can't remember the exact year of the guitar... i think it was late 90s. like... maybe 97.

it's a heavy *****!!! It felt much more alive than my friend's newer epiphone les paul custom. i think his is about 4 or 5 years old.

the tuners have been replaced with chrome gibson ones.
