Why did I have a hunch that told me this would end up being a pissing contest?
Look, if you like brunettes and he digs redheads, then it's win win. More brunettes for you and more redheads for him. No need to argue which is better in the sack.
Lighter guitars in the gibson range are SG's and semi hollows. SG's are really easy to find and they are cheap S/H. The tone is pure gibson, but just different enough to be noticable. They seem to be a bit more 'open' rather than 'thick' like a LP. The semi's have a woody organic tone (OMG -I can't believe I just referred to an electrical amplified tone as organic:banghead that is a little thinner than a LP. Plus they just look cool IMHO. The Gibson semi-hollows are way overpriced. Heratige make pretty good alternatives for example.
I tried an SG for a while. I didn't like it at the time. There isn't enough body strapped to me to make me feel like it's a big ol' chunk of wood, you know?
I've said it before, but this is the way I see it: everyone knows a certain model's strengths and shortcomings. when pleased theyre just qualities, when angry, theyre flaws!
I actually put my hands on a Faded Mahogany LP Studio yesterday that felt as good as (I think) they've always looked. Very, very tempting, especially given how cheap they are.

I tend to stay away from faded models. I seem to remember reading something about gibson using their better wood for the gloss models and the lesser guitars as faded models.
I seem to remember reading a whole lot of BS about why X Model, Y era, or Z construction method was to be totally avoided. Meh.
I've played a bunch of the Faded Studios and have been underwhelmed by most of them, though I actually really look the kinda rustic look of just...y'know...WOOD. This one was cool, though. Felt nice. Highly resonant unplugged. Had a bit twangier tone plugged in than I'm looking for in a LP, but pickups can do a ton there. I'm not totally sold, but I trust my hands and ears over "the internet said those are bad."
