Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

Dangly, wondering if you could tell me what stock Jazzmaster pickups are like? they look like they might sound like P90s but i understand they have rod magnets rather than a bar.

haha, they look P90ish but aside from having a warmer tone than usual Fender pickups, they're basically... A very smooth, cool yet warm sounding pickup if you know what I mean... listen to Dinosaur Jr. to get a feel for the distorted tone, as for the cleans...

http://youtube.com/watch?v=cHpBOhwXMak is a good representation (wait for the solo :laugh2:)

BUT be careful, as the stock Japanese pickups are just strat pickups with big covers, and thus sound more like long scale Jaguars... not a bad thing but not accurate.

(Is that a baritone with a synth pickup? Gimme 5 mins and re-read top part of this post)

...nope, stock bass VI, late 60s style :smokin: They "synth" pup is a flip up mute system, lol.

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

haha, glad to have reignited The Interest
Hopefully not enough to buy all the good ones and cause another price increase haha. Compared to australia (where MIJ's are 1400/1500 AUD although in new condition if not new) US eBay prices are considerably cheaper!!

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

It's finished now, but these are the only pics I have...

A bastardized Mustang copy I pieced together. Originally I had a full sized bucker in the bridge, but wanted to try a Duncan LIttle 59.

God I cannot Stand Jags or Mustangs! I know this will endear me to many of you!
(edit-I got to wondering how i woud feel if I really liked something and someone came on and said , not that they sucked, but that they "couldnt stand them"?) I dont know , I guess it isn't the best move , duh!
Jag and Stang away, dont mind me! They are interesting to say the least. Actually I wouldnt turn down that burst posted.

AGhhhhrrr . . . the JAGUAR is the best guitar (and best looking) Leo Fender ever created !!!

I am still mindphuked why he never did a simmilar shape during his G&L days !
Why stick to the T & S shapes only, i will never know !

Must get a Jaguar soon !

As you can tell, the obsession is a bit stronger with Jags... (with looks and sound)
...

WOW . . . what a beautifull colour !!!
Must be the most awsome colour to grace a Jaguar since the three-colour-sunburst !

YOUR guitar is officially the best "parts-special" i have ever seen, and i am not too fond of this shape, as it is a wee bit small for my liking.
But still, a guitar that i would deff rock ever night !!!
Why did you choose that bridge ?
Are you trying to get more of a Tele-Twang from it ?
If so, is it working ?

Slightly OT :

I have a Gibbo Melody Maker, and is thinking of putting a lil '59 into the bridge pos aswell !
What can you tell me about the tone of that wee humbucker ?
Thanks for your imput !

James

PS : what pu is now in the neck pos ?

Haha, as the original duo sonc bridges had tele saddles (but were toploaders) I imagine they might sound more tele (they do have more jangle than Mustangs at least...) Toronados use the same bridge as a duo sonic but with strat saddles and through stringing, people have been known to put those in Duo Sonics...

My fave thing about the thin Mustang body is that it actually drastically improves upper fret access.

I TAKE IT EVERYONE WHO POSTED ON THIS THREAD ALLREADY KNOWS ABOUT THIS HERE FORUM !!!

...I prefer shortscale.org, but post at neither as much as I post here. Sometimes I wonder why not ;) Really both forums are needed as neither is quite sufficient, lol.

...yes :D The best, chimey, bell-like clean tone with the most adjustable paramaters... anything from bright and trebly to warm, PERFECT twang, shape I fell in love with, trem that stays in perfect tune... Most people don't think of Jags this way, but there's something about the distorted tone that just sounds big, defined, smooth and grinding at the same time. But no matter what you put behind/on top of it, it still sounds like a Jag.

haha, you got me started...

Thanks!

I chose the bridge because it's a better design than a Mustang stocker and it looks good. Also, It was an effort to get a big fat tone out of it (and it worked). The bridge has good amount of mass, is well coupled to the body and is string through. (It sounds huge for such a tiny piece of wood). It wasn't an attempt to get twang out of it.

The little 59 is a decent approximation of a 'bucker tone for what it is. But it doesn't sound "exactly" like a full-sized bucker. In fact, it kind of has it's own thing going on, but it's a good thing.

I had a broken Duncan Alnico II Pro Strat pickup that I rewound for the neck...I likes it! :cool2:

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

Loving that black mustang.

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

I really don't need a jag, not a bad guitar by any means, but man, seafoam green is the most tempting color ever on one.

The looks, the style, the color, the vibe, just so cool and timeless

Thanks for the link - i do not know that one ;)

When folks ask for descriptions of the Jazz & Jag tones, people will be quick to point out what a Jazzmaster sounds like, by refurring to Dino Jr. !
Fair enough, but what band do they use for theall-mighty JAG ?

* I * am quick to show them toward Fu Manchu !!!

Up to about 5years ago, all their albums was done with either two Jags, or a Jag & SG set up !
And i LOVE their tone ! Fuzzed-up, yes, but sooo cool !

Man i gotta get a JAG real soon !

FANTASTIC choice of pu's from a great co. !

Not that i want to sound like a copy-cat, but i had a very simmilar pu-config in mind for my little Melody Maker !

Cool Rail(b) / Lil '59(n)

According to the SD diagrams it looks like they are a good match !

Can you try and describe the tone you get out of your Fnder now ?

Thanks so much

Re: Show me some Jaguars, Jazzmasters, Mustangs

...well, everyone knows I'm a HUGE fan of the stock Mustang bridge/trem setup... but there are about 5 million ways to **** it up if you don't know what you're doing, I'll admit. When setup properly they stay in tune amazingly and give you a huge range in pitch... Plus a sound you can't get anywhere else. My favorite trem ever.

Jag tone? I'd point to RHCP bloodsugarsexmajik for clean and overdriven, and Placebo's first album for big time dirties...
