Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

While hate is a strong word, I dislike the Les Paul body. If it weren't for Slash, I'd probably ignore it altogether.

The Les Paul just looks like an ultra-round acoustic guitar style body. Now, mind you I ultimately prefer pointy guitar styles, so that has an effect on how I see the LP aesthetically.

And before anyone has a fit (LOL), I play what are essentially Les Paul's specwise. I just prefer a more threatening look.

That being said, the Fender Stratocaster is the greatest guitar known to man. IMO

If it isn't an Ibanez JEM or S series, a PRS Custom 24, anything Petrucci, a synthetics-embracing Parker, a Dean Cadillac or a Rich Bich, I probably find it favorable.

You have got to be a teenager.

I never found the Telecaster attractive.
I also agree that strange shape IE: iceman, flying V and most BC rich styles are not for me either.

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

I think just about every manufacturer has something I would not mind owning.

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

I never got the vampire wing modified styling of the Flying V. Asymmetric and thin and the wimpy kind of pointy.

From a practical standpoint I have difficulties playing guitars that throw off the hand positions. I love Explorers as a concept but I can't hit the strings. Muscle memory.

Not real big on Tele's, regular Strats or Gretches.

I really like Ovation acoustics except when sitting down...not a fan of the bowl backs lol

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

I don't hate anything. I lean toward Fender designs and Les Pauls. That said, anything that gives me the sound I want, plays well and isn't too strange looking can find a place in my heart.

Nah, I'm nearly 40. I wanted to play guitar in an era of pointy guitars and these are the guitars I still prefer today. And besides my guitar hero Slash, I haven't really gravitated to other Les Paul players knowingly. So, the LP falls into the category of uncool-looking guitars for me.

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

I hate Rickenbackers, Danelectros and jazz guitars, especially the ones that only have a neck pickup.

Also not fond of 8-strings and most 7-strings (Though the John Petrucci 7-string models are Nice). I don't care much for Fender Mustangs, Jaguars, Jag-Stangs or Jazzmasters either.

Strats and LPs are nice, as well as singlecut PRS's. Gibson Firebirds aren't my cup of tea but on the other hand, I love Paul Stanley's Washburns that were based on the Firebird. They look cool with the sparkle finishes and the full sized humbuckers. I'm also really liking Charvel So Cals lately.

MLs are pretty much the worst.

Except for Razorbacks, it's like they took the ML and said "How can we make this worse?"
Oh, and these are pretty awful.

Just a few of the ones on my list...

My top vote would be for maybe the ugliest guitar of all time, the non-reverse Firebird.

I don't mind Vees, Explorers, and regular Firebirds, but some of the modern pointy guitars I really don't care for--namely Deans, and B.C. Rich guitars. I never cared much for any of the B.C. Rich guitars, even the now-classic Seagull, Bich, and Eagle. The Parker Fly is an odd shape, but they are so comfortable that they get a pass.

I love Carvin's CT-6--that is a SEXY guitar; but their semi-hollow 645 has a really ugly shape to it. Ugh!

I've always like Ovation guitars--but their bowl back is definitely NOT compatible with my bowl front!!! :)

And in 50 years of playing, I have never found a Gibson acoustic that I though was worth buying. Every single one of them pretty much sucked. Definitely not the tone or feel that I look for in an acoustic guitar.

Cannot abide the Telecaster or Strat. They look great, but don't fit my body like other shapes do.

Also not a fan of Explorer styles, for the way they hang on me and I have to pick beyond the centerline of my body (practically over my left pocket).
As well, the upper bout means I have to kick my shoulder out.
Ideally, my pick should be no further than my navel, and my arm crossing the top of the body near the bridge.

I'm most comfortable with a Jackson Warrior body, a handful of V shapes (but more due to the necks than the bodies), and the double-cut shapes where the treble and bass "scoops" on the edges of the body are centered closer to the neck pickup rather than directly between them like Strats (i.e. prefer those similar to PRS body shapes, but with Jackson logos :p )

Re: Some guitars styles you hate, but someone else likes...

PRS and BC Rich (I play a lot of thrash and black metal, mind). I think PRS are ill-proportioned ugly kitsch, and BC Rich just silly poser crap for 12-years-olds and people like Kerry King. Also ESP's Vyper series. Taking an SG--objectively the most awesome design in history--bending it out of shape and making it twice as thick, wtf is that, some failed genetic experiment?

So much for shapes. Surface-wise, I hate it when they mess up the whole guitar with crazy inlays and abalone bindings and **** like that. Like some expensive Ibanez models. At Ibanez, the cheapest guitars look best and the priciest look worst. I want them to spend money for making the guitar better--not uglier. Also, quilt maple. Eurgh. That's the worst a guitar can look.

edit: right, you also asked what I like. By far the best is the SG, which the devil created after his own image. Also because it's an extremely comfortable guitar with insane upper fret access. Second is the Jackson Dinky, a compact, moderate superstrat, also a delight to play. I really like the looks of LPs too, but they're probably the most uncomfortable guitars on earth, so I just can't stand playing them. Which is a shame because their sound is so beautiful...

I dislike pretty much all fender guitars, they are just not my cup of tea. except for the jim root telecaster and jim root jazzmaster, damn, I'd love one of these.

I bet that jim hootsman tele is just like any other tele but with a few minor details but mostly a name on it.
