Starter Drumming Kit?

A friend of mine wants to start drumming, but he doesn't have a lot of money and he can't have a real drumset because of neighbours, etc.

Right now, all he can do is practice on pots and pans. :smack: :laugh2:

Are there any sorts of pads or something he can practice on that don't make very much noise?

Yes, yes, I know.... Asking a drummer to be quiet... impossible. Goes right up there with keeping time... :fing25:

They sell pads that you put on the heads. Also you can stuff a pillow or blanket inside of the bass drum to make it not as loud. Or he can insulate his room :laugh2:

They do sell muted drum sets, called practice sets. They look like a drum set, but the drums are really small (in terms of depth) and have mutes on them. A friend of mine (a drummer) has some for his basement for late night drumming. Also, as Fiber-Optics said, there are mutes for the heads. They're just big slabs of rubber that pretty much mute the sound.

a stick + a 5 gallon bucket + a metronome + 5 years practice = a drummer with stellar timing. (the rarest of all musicians)

pearl make a scaled down drumset called the rhythm traveller. it comes with normal heads as well as a mesh-type head that doesn't make any sound but still replicate the feel of a normal drumset. also included are a 16" cymbal, 14" hi-hats, kick pedal, hi-hat stand, and rubber mutes for cymbal/hi-hats. just swap the mesh for the included heads and you have a normal drumset. best of both worlds!
