String Breakage and Locking Tuners

Hi Guys and Girls,

i experience a strange thing since installing schalker f-series locking tuners on my Fender Stratocaster:

Since installing them i break more strings than ever (before that i broke a sting every half year), even with new strings.

Originally i installed them to make gigging more secure and tuning stable -but currently the effect is quite the opposite.

Any ideas or experience with this problem? thank you in advance!

PEACE

Re: String Breakage and Locking Tuners

hi & thanks for your reply!

they break just right at the headstock at the tuning post/key.

Re: String Breakage and Locking Tuners

You're most likely clamping down on them too hard. Those tuners have a big wheel on the back side right? MY PRS has locking tuners. They clamp from the top down and have a slot on the bolt like a standard screw head. The slot is presumably so you can get them good and tight. But I've never used it. I just finger tighten them...and since the bolt is pretty small I can't get too much torque on them so I have no worry of over tightening. Never has the string broken there nor have I ever had one slip. I'd suggest you screw them until they stop and then give 'em just a bit more (perhaps an 1/8th of a turn) and see what happens.

Re: String Breakage and Locking Tuners

Is it the same string that's breaking or ones on different posts? There's a chance you may have a sharp edge on the post-hole. When you restring, turn the post 180-degrees and see if it breaks again.

And yes, finger tight works for me on all my locking tuners - PRS, Schaller, Reverend, Gotoh, Sperzel.
