Re: String poll!

I tried a set of EB Cobalts the other day and was quite surprised at how fast the plain strings corroded...only after a few days of playing and one rehearsal they looked and felt worse than the DRs and D'Addarios that I usually use.

If forced to play one brand forever...D' Addario.

Re: String poll!

GHS nickel rockers semi flat wound strings. 10's on everything but my SRV Strat, which gets 11's. I currently have a hybrid set of 10' Ernie Ball Cobalts on my Les Paul. I just wanted to try them. I actually like them.

EB doesn't make 1/2 sizes :(

At this point, I don't use either brand. GHS custom gauge sets for me.

Re: String poll!

Elixirs for tone & extended life
Slinkys for never ending smoothness (no oxidation) & long life
Don't care for the D'Addarios

Re: String poll!

If I were to compare the strings to a type of amp's sound:

Slinks: Fender

D'Ads: Marshall

This is what I hear. Feel wise D'ads are gummier and Slinks are crisper...that's the best I can do. To even out the sound across the board, I like putting D'ads on the F style, and the Slinks on the G style.

Re: String poll!

SIT Power Wound for me, for the last 25 years. Best strings I've found, last a long time, and sound fresh for a long time.

Re: String poll!

It was 1968-69 when 'the guitarist' in town hipped me to 'Slinky' strings. For years, EB's were all I used. In the 70's, it seemed everyone and his brother had a string company offering super, extra, slinky strings. I like and use them both. D'Ad's are excellent strings as are EB's. While I use and try a wide variety of different strings these days, EB's and D'Ad's always provide great tone and consistant quality. I've never used either's coated strings, just the good ol standby's, but I'm sure they are as consistant as their standards.

Re: String poll!

i've tried alot of different brands. i've stuck with d'addarios. they have some kind of mojo.

I've read lots about people using 11s on their SRV strats. How does this affect the tone and the play/action, etc?
Thanks!

Re: String poll!

I think D'Addario's have a bit more punch and sustain. But I like Everly B-52's even more.

I was concerned at first that the large strings would cause the neck to warp over time. But the SRV has a heavy neck, and there has never been a problem. I had it set up with the 11's, and the action is fine. Plays great, but you do notice the thickness. It takes time but you get used to it. I am changing a bit I think in my tastes. I'm thinking of lower the Texas Specials a bit. I bought a set of D. Allen Tru-62's for my partscaster. Now the Texas Specials sound a bit harsh by comparison.

I met Smokin Joe Kubek. He uses really heavy strings. Like 13's or bigger. He swears by them and claims that is the source of his tone. He does tune down a 1/2 step. You can see his high E string from the back of the gig. He is an amazing player and a nice guy.

D'Addarios. They have excellent tone, they're consisent, they're affordable... and they are manufactured here on LI.

Re: String poll!

Who here has tried Cleartones? I tried them first from when I started, but I can't remember too much about them other than I didn't like them - though I'm a lot different from when I started playing. If they are like Elixirs, but don't have that stupid string dandruff I'm sold.

Re: String poll!

Dunlop strings have a serious intonation malfunction

I've never had a problem with intonation. The thing that I hate about EB's is that I've never bought a set that lasted more than a week. I've played the Power Slinks in standard and they have no longevity to them. The D'Ads I'm kind of indifferent. I really like how Dunlops feel and I really really like the lifespan to them (they've lasted me 6 months before).

Re: String poll!

I started off usinng Ernie Balls. Took me forever to try anything else, but I eventually switched to Dunlops because they seemed to break in quicker and maybe even stay fresh a bit longer. I tried the Cobalts, and at the same time someone suggested I try D'Addarios. I stuck with EB. They just feel so good and the cobalts really are super responsive to my ears.

Re: String poll!

Eversince I've switched to D'Addarios from Balls I have never broken a string, also they last much longer with me. In my opinion have a sweeter and firmer high end than the EB's, though the balls are a little brighter in general. The decay with the Dads is more graceful I think.

Re: String poll!

my guitar tech pronounces them as: Dee-a-dairy-oh
i always pronounced them as: dad-airy-oh
