Talk To Me About Genz Benz G-Flex Cabinets

I've always heard good things about the G-Flex 2x12 cabinets. I believe a few you on here have them. I've heard they can keep up with most 4x12's. Anyways, I'm a bigger is better kind of guy when it comes to some things. Although, it might be cool to have two of the 2x12's as well. So, anyone have or played through any of the 4x12's? I've read quite a few reviews on the 4x12's and they sure do seem like they'd be up my alley. I've read that the speakers are based on Vintage 30's. Does anyone know if that's true? Think the 4x12 might be too boomy? I think the cabinet would be great with my Marshall JVM410H head. Plus, they just look so freakin cool.;)

Not a big fan - I found while the low end response was there, it wasn't tight enough for my needs.

Re: Talk To Me About Genz Benz G-Flex Cabinets

I agree with VK. I've had a few, they sounded kinda boxy at higher volumes and maybe a little loose in the lows. George isn't using them anymore either. They do look cool though. It could also be the stock speakers which are supposedly pretty similar to V30s. They just may not work well with that cabinet, some G12Ts might sound great in them.

That sounds quite different from the GFlex cab I heard. They had one at Sam Ash a while back and I played a Mesa Dual Recto through it. Tere's plenty of low end believe me. Tightness is relative a lot of times and depends a lot on what head you are pumping through it. If I were you, I would give it an honest shot.

I used a Soldano HR50+, a Mark IV, and a Rivera S120 in mine, not exactly crappy amps. It sounded fine at lower volumes, it was when it was cranked that I didn't really like the tones, but as always, YMMV.

Re: Talk To Me About Genz Benz G-Flex Cabinets

Thank you so much fellas. I'm lookin for something, but I'm not sure what it is. I sent VK a PM about the time I started this thread and what he retorted back to me made alot of sense and pretty much what i'm lookin for in a 4x12 cabinet. I want a tight low end, but I don't want that high end fizziness.

Re: Talk To Me About Genz Benz G-Flex Cabinets

About the G-Flex, the stock speakers are rumored to be a weak spot in them. I couldn't say since the 2x12 I got came unloaded, but when I dropped a pair of Emi Black Powders in it was all the way there: the kick and authority of a 4x12 without the boominess, (although some might go for that) high end clarity, really more than I ever thought you could get out of a 2x12. HOWEVER I'll say that not all heads I've tried with it sound great; it's a little dark with my buddy's Dual Rec, for instance, so compatibility does factor in.

Doubling up on the 2x12's would be, IMO, preferable to the single 4x12- just look at the size of that beast and imagine trying to cram it into your backseat. The 2x12, OTOH, are very managable, girth-wise.

I have a 2x12 G-Flex and i love it. It definatly doesnt have the extreme tightness, it does however have the very best palm muting sound ive ever heard. It easily fills a room and can cut quite well.

I had to play an outdoor gig unmiked and with my Triple XXX 2x12 combo at 2:00 i was heard quite well over a full PA system. There was no boxyness and no looseness of the lows, it could be that since i was running it as an extention cab instead of an only cab, but ive run the g-flex alone at high volumes and didnt notice anything bad.

Ive played it with a couple of different heads and its the best cab ive ever heard. The only amp it doesnt get along with that i own is a RedBear and if you've ever played a RedBear you can see why a cab that adds lows would not suit the Redbear well.

I wouldnt get the 4x12 though, according to those that have played both the 4x12 sounds more sterile. Also the 4x12 is ginormous, isnt it something like 8 inches taller than the average full sized cab?

Re: Talk To Me About Genz Benz G-Flex Cabinets

I use the 2x12. very nice low end and good metal sound. if I were to get a second one I would probably put a different speaker inand x pattern for vareity.

Re: Talk To Me About Genz Benz G-Flex Cabinets

I have the 412. Can't make it fart out. Where other cabs fart out, the GB produces the lows and sub-lows of the note. Totally blew me away and it's the best cab for me for what I do. It makes more lows than my two Mesa cabs, and it makes tighter lows than my Mesa cabs. It also has a unique but pleasing honkiness. It's warm. The 212 is nice too, but the 412 is not twice as powerful to me, it is ten times as powerful.

A tight-sounding, efficient, well built cab, that produces great, big lows that are surprisingly focused.

The speakers are great.

Nothing wrong with these things.

I have never had that problem!

due to all the Raunch dressing lube, or the teeny weeny?

just playin along

Re: Talk To Me About Genz Benz G-Flex Cabinets

I am sorry, Theodie. I went the wrong way with that.

I guess it doesn't matter how much Raunch dressing you apply, due to your kung-fu grip.

That 2x12 looks like a great deal. What do they go for?

Re: Talk To Me About Genz Benz G-Flex Cabinets

Tim at EarCandyCabs.com can build you a custom 2x12 and you can get whatever tone you are looking for. He custom builds them specifically to work with your gear and he uses premium materials and you can get all kinds of crazy features. I have the BuzzBomb and it is staggeringly loud for a 2x12, it engulfs any cab I've put it up against! They go for around $500 depending on what stuff you pick. They are tuned according to your specifications and the BuzzBomb comes ported too! EC rocks, check them out!

What kind of head are you running through it?

Thanks man. I'll look into those.

Jolly by golly, forget about amp crap for a minute! yer friends are all worried sick about you. Can you give them a heads-up over in the "Coughing up blood" thread and let them know when you'll be seeing a doctor?

after that, you can read the below

they are Peavey amps, a XXX and a 6505+, but the Genz also improved what I heard from my old Marshall, a TSL 100 (my favorite modern Marshall, don't care what anybody says), versus the Mesas.

I still use the Genz with one of the Mesas (vintage 30s) with both of my amps. (haven't tried my Roland Cube-60 with it yet - wheee! fun!)
