Talk to me about Solteros. And maybe Boleros.

So spring must be right around the corner because that's the time of year I seriously consider adding to my stable of neglected guitars. This year I've been seriously considering a white Dean Soltero or maybe a DBZ Bolero. My budget dictates these would be in the Korean range. Anyone have any experience with either of these? What are they like? How Les Pauly do they sound/feel? I also have a Dean '79 reissue V. How would either sound compared to that? Sound is part of the reason but I am a shallow person so the other part of the reason I am considering one is I like the subtle, added contour to the body. There may be better LP clones for sound but I'm really digging that contour. It's sexy. Should I do it? Should I save my money? Or should I instead try and find a Retronix and save my pennies for one of those instead because they're sexy too.

Re: Talk to me about Solteros. And maybe Boleros.

Neither one are currently in production. Solteros I have played had a LP feel to them for sure. All the Solteros including imports have Dean USA pickups IIRC. Fior sure the USAs and the VERY limited produced Japanese Solteros.

I recommend a used White Leslie West Soltero model.

Re: Talk to me about Solteros. And maybe Boleros.

I like the DBZ Siberian Quilt, it's very unique. I think it's awesome. A shop near me carries them. I'm pretty sure they're still being made but I could be wrong on that. As for sounding like a LP I'm not a good judge on that. It's been a couple of years since I checked them out.

Re: Talk to me about Solteros. And maybe Boleros.

I just bought the Dean. I hope to offer a review in a week or two. Thanks for the feedback.

Re: Talk to me about Solteros. And maybe Boleros.

SOl,tero is a sweet Les Paul. Sexy in all the right places…

Re: Talk to me about Solteros. And maybe Boleros.

I've been hanker'n for a Soltero for a while now, the right one just hasn't come my way, sucks Dean stopped making them.
DBZ (now DBZ Diamond) still makes the Bolero, but the headstock just doesn't do it for me.
It's annoying to me that Dean Z. took that model away from Dean Co. to DBZ just to fall out with his own company.... again.

Re: Talk to me about Solteros. And maybe Boleros.

Ugh, he left DBZ? Theres a guy who needs a keeper with a shock collar. I really like the DBZ stuff but it bugged me that he jumped from his namesake company to make different guitars....and now he's gonna do it again? Lame.

He left last Summer IIRC. Now has a new company too.

Ok, this is just plain sexy:

Looks like Dean finally figured out a headstock that doesn't look like ***.

Re: Talk to me about Solteros. And maybe Boleros.

One things for sure, the man knows how to make money off of his name. Start a guitar company, sell it, start another one, sell it, and start another one. It may not be what we want but it is brilliant.

Re: Talk to me about Solteros. And maybe Boleros.

See the price on that one? :eek5:

Re: Talk to me about Solteros. And maybe Boleros.

I think the Soltero headstock is still the best.
The new stuff looks ok (still all Korea or China? unless you want to drop 6K) but somethin about this Dean guy???
It's kind of like buying tech stuff... is this guy going to update the usb driver? Is anybody going to even be there in six months to answer the phone?

Re: Talk to me about Solteros. And maybe Boleros.

If I ever end up with that Soltero at Guitar City…(Talkin' to Gene)

Pearly Gates going in it right away.

Re: Talk to me about Solteros. And maybe Boleros.

If you mean Music City, you are to late. Jody has closed shop. Sold the place and moved to Hudson. He still has that Korean Soltero. I looked at it about 10 days ago the last day he was there. I went there just to pop in and discovered him packing up and tearing down.

Re: Talk to me about Solteros. And maybe Boleros.

Guitar Center COM right now has a used Dean USA champagne silver for around 600 bucks.

This is another thing that makes it hard for me to take Mr Dean seriously; with all his companies he wants to charge $5k for a guitar that you'll be lucky to turn around for $1k.
In his bio page he builds himself up as someone who requires full creative control of a company, but I don't see the difference, he's put his name to 3 companies that overcharge for USA guitars while subsisting on ("acceptable" but ultimately disposable) Asian Imports.
If Mr. Dean really want's to be a rebel; offer us a quality USA guitar at Carvin prices.... like $1500 for his new flame maple top Soltero and $2200 for that snazzy hollow body thing.

Re: Talk to me about Solteros. And maybe Boleros.

Wonder how the Strettavita's are? Under $500.... Only thing I dont like is the 2 knob layout. Im guessing the V neck is similar to the solteros. I had a limited run soltero and loved it. Im soooo mad at myself for letting it go..

It was korean made, so Im guessing the Japanese ones are even better.
