Tele Thin-line w/F-hole - what do they sound like? comparisons please.

I've never played one, but I'm thinking of building a Tele-thin line with an F-hole, H x H pickup configuration (probably a JB bridge and 59 neck). I'm thinking of going with a swamp ash body and a maple top. I haven't decided what kind of neck I'd go with.

I'm just wondering if any of you guys could give me a general 'tonal range' that this guitar would be in. Would it sound more like a hollow body? solid body? would it sound 'in between' two guitars (for example, in between a les paul and a strat, ect)

Would it be bright? Fat? Ect?

Nothing like an LP - think a tele with more depth. Johnny Buckland in Coldplay uses them a lot these days, I really like them

As far as distortion, (and I know it could be different) with the JB and 59, what would I be looking at? Full? bright? Scooped? Middy? lots of lows, highs or mid? I've read what these pups are like, but I'm wondering what they would be like in a Thin line.

I own a thinline tele with an f hole. I think its one of the most versitle guitars out there depending on what you do to it. You can pretty much make it sound how you want it to. With the 59 and jb it will be a good rock guitar. It has a bright sound. Just a really clean sound, twangy at times depending on what you have in the bridge. I'm putting a tele hot rail in my bridge so i can get a really agressive tone. The only complaint that i have is that it doesn't sustain as much as other semi-hollow body guitars, hopefully the hot rail will fix that. But the tone makes up for it. It is my main ax and for good reason. Get the sd pickup booster pedal and your tele will really scream.

Tab Benoit uses them exclusively. Check him out for an idea of hpw they do cajun blues.

...maybe a JB would be a bit too trebley.... and I wouldn't call the thinline tele a "rock" guitar, more for indie or garage stuff. '59 would be my suggestion, but I've never played one of those axes, so you can never be sure

I was thinking a thin line would be a 'heavier' rock guitar than a strat, given the single cut and hollow side(s), when both guitars have 2 hums. would this be correct?

well, my 335 isn't suited for "heavier" stuff than, say, a les paul. It sounds "bigger", IMO, but it's not as suited for high-gain stuff. For lower gain reaches, semis are the badger's nadgers, but I'd go solidbody if I was doing metal or something.

Semihollow guitars are great when you've got a bit of space in the mix and need a warm tone that spreads out. I find them to be a little indistinct in crowded mixes, though.

I have a certian body I've been looking at and it looks like it's only 1/3 a hallow body (weird). The top third, where the F- hole is, is hollow. The middle where the pickups are is solid. The bottom, where the controls are, is not hollow; except where the controls are supposed to go, of course.

So, is this pretty much standard for thinlines (I beleive it is a "72" style)?


And as a side note, It's not for metal stuff. I like some good, thick, cutting distortion like 3eb's first album, or even some collective soul, or weezer, the list goes on forever.
