:D other
I would say alt rock but those examples don't seem "alt" to me.. they seem pretty mainstream.

i said alternative but not like the bands that are listed under that name. im more 90's alternative like pearl jam, old weezer, soundgarden, chilil peppers, bands of that nature.

my band plays pixies/foo fighters esque music (original)

Re: The better poll of what your style is

I must admit I did have some trouble picking just one, but I did. I put myself under the math rock category... Math rock is like... time changes, wierd signitures, super fast-ness... Thrice is sort of Math rock... :-D

Re: The better poll of what your style is

Re: The better poll of what your style is

I just chant randomly and turn in circles. But...I think I'm gonna try Gearjonesers' " FarmJazz ".

Re: The better poll of what your style is

How about the category "Jamband" for all of us Dead Allmans Phish Reggae Funk Fusion Bluegrass types?

PS: Math rock is (like was said earlier) stuff that has tons of time changes, odd time signatures, and very tight, arranged parts.

Usually the roots are the progressive 70's bands like Rush, Yes, Genesis, ELP (sometimes even Zappa!). But you also get your Dream Theatre and Queensryche devotees as well.

Generally the term "Math Rock" is a derogatory term used when someone is trying to describe music that they feel is overly arranged or lacking in free feel.

:burnout:

Re: The better poll of what your style is

the selection was a little broad, i choose classic rock because thats where all of my influences come from, but i also like to do a little blues. my band plays a little of everything, new to old rock.

Re: The better poll of what your style is

I play lots of stuff.

Heres how it goes:

I started off on Oldschool stuff like AC/DC, Black Sabbath...
Then I sorta moved on to Jimi Hendrix stuff (very heavily hendrix)
Then I moved on to Rage Against the Machine, while still maintaining Hendrix.
Then I was doing alot of 311 stuff and Creed etc.
Then came to a big shift -where i met this drummer guy (2nd best drummer I know, awesome metal drummer) - Who turned me onto Dreamtheater.
Dreamtheater is still a strong theme along with some RATM still.
Then about a year ago - I started getting trained in classical/jazz on Acoustic
It's helped my playing alot.

Now I play lots of stuff like Metallica, Classical Medieval Dance (ala 'Bouree'), Dreamtheater, Vai, Anything I feel like on that given day.
I will hear a sweet song, go grab it off the net (for educational purposes) and learn it back to front etc.
Some other days I will just record myself playing whatever comes to mind.

- This is turning into my guitaring history isn't it.

I play in Church alot (that took u by surprise didn't it ;) ), I usually do 2-5 services a week depending on when I'm rostered on.
Our youth service usually sees 200 people, Our morning services see about 300-400 people each, and the Night service is packed out with about 400 seated + people standing or leaning on walls.
The music is very rocky (if ur interested look up bands like "planet shakers" and "third day").

Did that answer the question?
Was there even a question?

Peace out

BTW- Playing for 2 years, Age 15, Students: 4.

Re: The better poll of what your style is

meshuggah is like math rock, really heavy with odd time signatures and key changes. pretty cool actually, but the guys voice doesn't do it for me.

Re: The better poll of what your style is

Genre-naming is worthless sport best left to the editors of Spin magazine and other hipsters who would rather talk about music than play it.

I don't care what category I fit into and the very notion I should fit into any category at all is pretty silly to me. Just my .02.

Re: The better poll of what your style is

i'm more of a indie rock type of guy, though i do enjoy playing alot of classic rock. so maybe i'm more of a cross style type of guy.
