The Clapton "Layla" tone.

Re: The Clapton "Layla" tone.

So Custom variants will get you into the real deal single coil tone when split.

Single coil yes... vintage strat no... does matter what bar magnet you put under it its not the same sound as rod magnets... its the wrong coil shape and wire type for a vintage strat pup.

Re: The Clapton "Layla" tone.

Edgecrusher is right. I believe the Layla tone is actually the middle strat pickup soloed, that or it is at least incorporated. So that's a probably a no-go with an HH set up.

Re: The Clapton "Layla" tone.

I decided to just get a 2nd Jackson, and then get some strat and Claptonize it (but with the difference of adding a good floyd for tuning stability). Cheers!

Re: The Clapton "Layla" tone.

The Stagmag splits to a real single coil. The only difference is the magnetic pull from the second nearby coil.

Also the shape of the coils are wrong and the stagmag is wound with a wire gauge that you dont normally find on strat singles. Even the metal baseplate has an effect on the highs that you dont see with the fiberboard baseplates used in vintage strats.

So yes its a single coil when split, yes it uses rod mags.... but no its not the same as a vintage strat pup.

Actually the Riogrande tru split series are closer. The bobbins and wire gauges are the right size and they use a plastic baseplate which would be magnetically transparent like the fiberboard in a strat single coil.

Tonally when split they really do sound like strat singles cause they really are. The only negative with them really is that the coils wind up sitting in slighty different spots than the single coils do.

If you're worried about tuning stability, get a regular strat and block off the trem. That's how Clapton does it.

This is a very reasonably priced guitar for what you're getting (the 22nd fret is worth it alone): http://www.espguitars.com/products/9774-st-213-maple-ow?category_id=1963308-st-series

That should work well for "blocking" purposes, but allow you to use it within seconds if you change your mind.

And yes, those LTDs are great guitars for the money, I have an ST203 that I got for $200.
