The DISTORTION Quest hast Just Began. New focus needs new approaches. HELP Q: P

Re: The DISTORTION Quest hast Just Began. New focus needs new approaches. HELP Q: P

Really this is all moot if your just going to stuff a distortion box in front of a crappy amp you wont be happy its just urinating into the wind. In particular high gain pedals.

Re: The DISTORTION Quest hast Just Began. New focus needs new approaches. HELP Q: P

I decided to go with a Wampler Triple Wreck. after hearing some clips.
thansk for the input guys

Re: The DISTORTION Quest hast Just Began. New focus needs new approaches. HELP Q: P

I do not agree. it sounds to me pointless to buy a distortion pedal if you already have a top class amp like a mesa, marshall or something

but say you had a marshall with a clean channel that took pedals well and then put a mesa sounding pedal yuo could have both sides of the sword. Unless you have a decent clean amp (and good cab something definitely needed for metal) most of those pedals aren't going to sound worth their price tag.

I tell you what - I find most Mesas completely unplayable without an OD808 in front, so awfully sluggish they are. And Marshalls aren't all equal; if you ask me, those old school non master volume 1959s are some of the best amps to run pedals through IMHO, because they are so dynamic. The new ones like the DSL or the JVM are nothing like the classics; I find them cheaply made, overly compressed and lacking punch. Then there's the 900 Dual Reverb which I find beyond unusable.

So I do not agree with you at all. It seems pointless to me to run a dirt box through anything but a proper tube halfstack.

Now before we start a war-gument, why don't you try a tube preamp instead of a stompbox?
You'd get more definition and articulation that way, and a whole lot more versatility and tweakability for your peso, sir.
Now because cheeky is my second name, I should go ahead and offer you my Rocktron Piranha...

Effin hails, dude! :friday:

Ok dude... Let me know when you find a pedal that turns your crate flexwave into a bogner. It just isnt going to happen if the amp you have now lacks headroom and dynamics the pedal cant give it to it. But its all good it will only be 150 bucks you could have put towards a nice amp in the first place.

For a tube preamp, I went with the Peavey Rockmaster. Twice the tubes, half the price. :D

As for distortion, it really depends on what you're looking for. Solid state can stomp all over tubes in terms of pure brutality.

I haven't played a Flexwave, but I've got a few solid state Crates here that absolutely kill.

And that is still beside the point... So you have a cool crate GRATS! The point is its difficult if not impossible to take a lame amp and make it into a fire breathing dragon just using a pedal in particular a high gain pedal. A badass pedal into a wimpy amp is not a recipe for success.

It will work just fine if the amp has an effects loop. Any of the AMT Legend pedals, or the Amptweaker Tightmetal, or even a Dr Boogey will absolutely crush when run through a poweramp. Sure, it won't work with a 10w solid state practice amp, but I haven't seen too many of those with effects loops. :D

The OP has said before that his amp is a crate GT15. A 250 dollar pedal into a 69 dollar amp isnt a recipe for success but your welcome to continue to belabor your point and ill stand by mine a killer pedal with a lame amp isnt going to cut it.

But no rotary encoders, parametric mids, presets or flashy red panel. Not that any of those will make you play better, though. :D

Yeah and nope. I've played a couple of them Sansamps. Cool sounds but it becomes boring kind of quickly. Tubes are way more addictive.

Re: The DISTORTION Quest hast Just Began. New focus needs new approaches. HELP Q: P

I use to always use my maxon od9 pro plus and boss ds1/sem in front of the amp. But in recent times i purchased a peavey jsx and i found i don't really need them. Plus i think whats the point of putting a transistor based pedal in front of the true tube signal? all an all imo its all about the amp, without a good amp your never going to get there....

Re: The DISTORTION Quest hast Just Began. New focus needs new approaches. HELP Q: P

Once again, I have to qualify this by saying that I don't play "live", but it's hard to beat the Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Classic. And I'm not just kissing Duncan ass. Dial the "lead" channel gain up, and your guitars tone knob down, and you can get some sweet Santana-ish tones, with killer sustain.

These are true high-voltage tube circuits.

I'm dying to try the Twin Tube Blue also.
