Re: The elusive 10K PAF Disscusions Open (Scott)
To be fair, I haven't tried one myself so I don't know. I will say that it sounds nearly unanimous in here that the Demon is top-heavy tonewise, which is a turn-off for me.
This is because what folks (myself included) are looking for in the hybrids and the 10k is "vintage with balls", and a top-heavy, thin-sounding pickup would be the opposite of that, 10k or not.
Plus, as the argument has been made before, there are 6 vintage-output PAF-style Duncan 'buckers -- TWELVE if you count the fact that each has a neck and bridge model. And I don't know how many 13-16k higher output models.
(The single coil Strat line is also very well represented in both vintage and high output. Again the medium output is lightly represented, though in this case, it's the Twangbanger which has gotten a lot of great reviews. Maybe the Antiquity Custom Bridges +/-9k counts as medium too, and they're also really good.)
In the 9-12k humbucker range, maybe we have three, and that's if you count the DD neck (which has a ceramic mag -- not exactly vintage tone) and the Parallel Axis blues trembucker.
In other words, the Demon is just not a big menu to choose from compared to everything else. But if we can only have one, we're looking for the Twangbanger or Custom Bridge of humbuckers.
