"The one that got away" stories

Re: "The one that got away" stories

Had a '65 black face Deluxe Reverb that I sold not long after I got married. I really wasn't playing that much (at that point) so at the time, I sold it as I was starting a new stage in my life. Out of all the gear I owned, that's the one thing that still eats at me for selling.

I had a tobacco Washburn A20 stolen decades ago. Awesome fiddle. Lost an early 70s Marshall 100W in the same 'transaction'.

Re: "The one that got away" stories

There have been a few that fit the orig scenario. Went back to stores and they were gone.. OR ebay where I couldnt get back on to bid. Cant really name specifics right now.

My biggest regrets are guitars that Ive had but sold..(there are many.) A few of my biggest ones:
1)My trans black Epi Ace Frehley. Most of you say MEH to an EPI.. But.. I sold it cuz it was so light, kinda felt like a toy.. HOWEVER... A couple back surgeries later, Id LOVE to have it back.. Plus, it was nice looking, great player, sounded great and the black was pretty rare..
2)Black Kramer Focus 6000. Got it dirt cheap, put new pups in it.. Sold it. Was near mint shape, played great and had this amazing woody 80s metal tone to it...
3)My Washburn WM526. pretty rare model, carbon epoxy board,(and other cool features) great player, and I had the only on in the world with the finish mine had.
4)LTD AT400ATS- Yeah, not really special per se, but. Got it cheap. Was very heavy, but sustained for days, nice big frets, Duncans. GREAT AXE!! Sold it cuz I thought Id prefer a traditional 4 knob set up.. Regretted selling ever since. And they are discontinued and rare on the used market. Prolly cuz they are beasts!!

I have other regrets too (USA Washburns, etc) but wont write em all out..

Re: "The one that got away" stories

Original Marshall Jubilee Half Stack in the early '90s. It had a little smoke damage on the back of the cab (had been in a building with a fire), but was otherwise fine and way under $1000 out the door. I had just bought my first halfstack (JCM 800 2203) and was totally broke, so I couldn't spring for it. :(

Also, a B.C. Rich USA Eagle Archtop Supreme with transparent emerald finish for $1600 at the bottom of the '08 Recession. Can rarely find any USA Eagle for much less than $3000-$4000+ now...

Re: "The one that got away" stories

No pic, but a local GC had a Taylor 714CE for $1,200 due to a crack at the headstock. Despite the damage, it was the best sounding Taylor I've ever played and sounded better than the other 714CEs I've played.

I debated about it for literally one day. Decided to pull the trigger and it was already sold in less than 24 hours.

Still kick myself over it.

My dad had a 2000 714CE with the rectangle electronic control box, and it got stolen in like 2007, so he got a new 814CE with just the 3 knobs. He said he liked the tone of the old one better.

I was very unimpressed with the 814CE for the price tag associated with it. I think you are paying for the super fancy aesthetics....but to be fair, I'm more of a Martin and Gibson acoustic guy. Taylors have nice necks but most of them don't "wow" me by the tone.

Breedlove bridges the tonal gap between Taylor and the warmer-toned guitars.

That is a good description. I like Breedlove–especially their Cedar tops and the Myrtle Wood ones.

Re: "The one that got away" stories

Here is one Wattage just reminded me of....

Back in ~86 or so...I was really feeling this BC Rich Warlock. Funny thing is I wasn't playing hair band stuff so much as more maiden/priest...

It was like the pic, except it had the full compliment of taps phases etc...

So think this:

With these controls:

In this pink/purple floppy color (Ultraviolet) with black hardware:

I'd give a nut to have that guitar now...

Re: "The one that got away" stories

That's pretty intense. Did you use the Varitone much?
