Re: The 'post your Ibanez' thread

Yes, I only bought it a few years ago, but I always wanted one since back in the day, because at the time, I remember them being better than pretty much any Fender on the shelf. That's really not saying much considering how bad Fenders were generally in the late 70's. It's a good guitar and has aged really well, not in the same league as my '68 Fender, but then not much is. It makes for a good backup for sure.

As a side note, apparently there was never a lawsuit between Fender and Ibanez, just between Gibson and Ibanez. I had always called the Silver Series a 'Lawsuit' model, but some research disclosed otherwise.

Cheers..................................... Geoff

Sometimes I'm marvelling at the prices these Japanese Strat copies command, especially Tokais. Even seem some very clean Ibanez ones go for over $800!

Yeah, the term 'lawsuit' seems to be more of a general umbrella term for guitars that were knock offs of G and F. That's how I see it anyway.

I recognize a number of these.

Perhaps some brand polls next season - ULTIMATE SDUG Ibanez....

Indeed :friday:.

Re: The 'post your Ibanez' thread

Great stuff so far guys!

Crappy photography here, sorry bout that.

Pic of RG7421, 1999 model IIRC (7 string guitar made in Japan that's now discontinued unfortunately) when it was bone dead stock :

I got this guitar back in 2009. Neck was just beautiful and it just had really good sustain. Pickups, electronics and bridge were nothing to write home about though.

Fast forward to recent times (pic courtesy of phone, so again, crap quality)

IMG123.jpg

Now equipped with Seymour Duncan Blackouts, a new Hipshot bridge also with Graphtec string saver saddles, tone pot is gone (because well, I don't have a use for one and I quite frankly don't miss it at all) and on/off switch for the battery.
Bridge and saddles were the most recent upgrade, just all in the one package, done this year while the electronics/pickups were later in the year in 2009.

Funny story behind the pickups and on/off switch actually.
The pickups were wired in with the help of Neil, who we know around here as Crusty Philtrum. When I was say "with the help of", I mean he did 90 per cent of the work and I was kinda just watching on the side occasionally helping because I know jack all about electronics :laugh2:
The on/off switch was actually done out of necessity, since I thought I had a stereo jack, but turns out I didn't, so it couldn't be wired conventionally like you would with active pickups.
Just wired the battery terminal thing (I think, I'm not really sure since as I said, guitar electronics is not my strong point) straight to the switch so we could get the pickups working.
I actually ended up REALLY liking this mod, because you can just disconnect the battery without unplugging the lead (since it's not connect to the output jack anyway) and it's been good for saving battery life.
The pickups actually still work with the switch off, just the output lowers significantly, so you can kinda go from a high gain sound to a low gain crunch by flicking the switch haha.

That all said, that's my last and only set of Blackouts I'll buy.
The output is just too ridiculous really and the overall tonal character just isn't as good as EMG 707s.
Still better than the stock pickups and obviously far less hum/less noise, if I had to say something positive about the BOs.
Also, you might be able to see I couldn't seem to be able to keep the actual knob on the volume control/pot thing :D

As for the bridge, here's a pic that demonstrates the difference in size :

71e8be78.jpg

The bridge on the right is the original, stock, crappy Ibanez bridge, the one on the left is the Hipshot aftermarket bridge that were made specifically to fit RG7421s and replace the original bridge.
As you can see, it's basically double the thickness of the original bridge.
When you actually see the two bridges together in real life, it's extremely apparent just how superior the Hipshot bridge is in overall build quality.
It's made of brass instead of whatever cheap metal was used for the original bridge and you can really see the difference in the material used when you see the bridges.
After replacing the old bridge with that badboy, the sustain increased and along with the new saddles, tuning stability is better. Guitar actually sounds a little better too, which is quite cool.

So while it's a pretty common guitar as far as Ibanez 7 strings go, I guess it actually does at least have a bit of a bit of an interesting story/some interesting info about it.

Re: The 'post your Ibanez' thread

Hey, Snap! I'm guessing that's a Crunch Lab (or maybe Drop Sonic?) and a Liquifire in there? How are they?

DSCF0653.jpg

Pickups are an Air Norton in the neck and a D-Sonic in the bridge.

I really like the Air Norton, a very open sounding pickup, doesn't get muddy at all. The D-Sonic is not my thing, I find it to have a very strong treble output, not piercing but overpowering. Thinking of getting a Tone Zone to replace it.

Re: The 'post your Ibanez' thread

Here's my 2007 RG321MH loaded with Tone Zone/Air Classic but I'll soon replace the TZ with an Air Classic bridge. Tone pot is disconnected. Switchcraft jack, Stewmac frets, Sperzel tuners, CTS Pots, Graphtech nut and GFS Stainless Steel saddles.

Well, you have the honour of posting the first 7 in the thread. What happened to your 1527 with the Blaze pups and locking stud upgrade? Don't tell me you flogged it :nono:...

The on/off switch for the battery is a clever little mod. Get a freakin' knob and switch tip!

Hmm, I would've though that the original bridge was Gotoh, as the axe is MIJ. It would've been interesting to have different bridge baseplates (e.g. brass, aluminium, steel) when you were modding to experiment with tonal characteristics.

Good to see people rocking some hardtails.

Re: The 'post your Ibanez' thread

I used to have an Ibanez Silver Series Strat, but mine was ash and extremely heavy. I just didn't bond with it.

Later I had an even heavier Ibanez, a twin-neck Artist. I ended up selling that to a buyer in the USA, i think the freight cost alone was close to $600.

Re: The 'post your Ibanez' thread

Please see my avatar :D

I don;t have a bigger pic of her, but she's an AEL40SE, solid spruce top, sycamore back and sides, mahogany neck, rosewood board.

She sounds absolutely beautiful, I fell in love with her as soon as I picked her up in the shop 2 years ago. She only set me back £320 as well. I personally think she sounds like she should have cost twice that amount.

EDIT: This is just a stock photo, but its a good one:

I had a PF-100 back in 1979...... :D

Still got one of the pickups somewhere (Super 70).

Re: The 'post your Ibanez' thread

I have four :) ( I do have 7 other guitars, including Gibson SG, LP, Fender Yngwie strat, and on top of those I have made two myself: a Dime and 7-string-baritone/6-string double-neck.)

My very first guitar. My dad bought this in 95 or so. Second hand.

Here are the specs:

Ibanez PL1770 (Pro Line) made in 86
Alder body
Maple neck
Ebony fretboard
Original Edge tremolo
SD Parallel Axis stack neck pup
SD YJM Fury middle pup
SD Parallel Axis Distortion bridge pup

It used to have a pickup preset switch (5 small buttons you can see on the pickguard, they are now just for looks.)

Pup switching as follows:

1. Bridge hum in series
2. Bridge hum in parallel
3. Bridge and neck pups in parallel with each other
4. Neck stack in parallel
5. Neck stack in series.

When I push/pull is up it's jsut the middle pickup.
I can split the neck and bridge pup and I have the "Power boost" for the neck stack which reverses the phase of one of the coils making them in phase. I gives more power but it hums.

Normally I use 9-46 strings in E. At the moment it has Gold plated Aurora strings.

Not on the picture: I use it with the furrier Dimarzio Yngwie strap.

Here it is:

My kind of Tribute to Dime is the next one.

Specs:

Ibanez DG350 (Destroyer) made in 86
Basswood body with Flame maple top.
Maple neck
Rosewood fretboard
Original Edge tremolo
Stock Ibanez V5 pickups

Normally I use 9-50 (Dime signature gauge) strings in E but at the moment it has 11-14-18-36-52-70 in A-D-G-F-A-D so can riff in A and solo in D. Sort of a 6/7-string hybrid. And every now and then 10-52 in D

Here it is:
View attachment 28172

Then is my 80's shredder guitar

Specs:

Ibanez RG465m
Basswood body
Maple neck and fretboard
Edge3 tremolo
Dimarzio Air Norton S neck pup with white cover
Dimarzio Air Zone bridge pup with white bobbins and gold pole pieces.
EMG Afterburner boost.

Switching:
1. Bridge in series
2. Both split
3. Both in series, in parallel with each other
4. Neck in parallel
5. Neck in series

I changed the DMZ D-Activator because it was a little too hot and trebly for that guitar. Air Zone is more vintage and warm. And I wanted a different look with the white pup covers. I installed the Afterburner just in case I need some extra power after all. It gives nice Fuzz flavours to the sound.

Normally 9-42 in E

Here it is:

Fourth and hopefully not the last Ibanez. I just love the double cutaway LP shape.

Specs:

Ibanez AR250
Mahogany body and neck
Rosewood fretboard.
EMG 89-X-R neck pup
EMG81TW-X bridge pup

I just changed the pickups today. The stock pups were not that great. I didn't want to go with the usual 81-85 or 81-60 combo so I added the X's, white covers, split option and the neck pup splits so that when split the singlecoil is nearer the neck (hence the R for reversed.)

Normally 10-52 in D

Here it is:

Here is all I have for now. Ibanez's are phenomenal guitars. I could play any gig with basically any Ibanez guitar and it would sound at least okay.

My favourite guitar brand.
