Re: The 'post your Ibanez' thread
Great stuff so far guys!
Crappy photography here, sorry bout that.
Pic of RG7421, 1999 model IIRC (7 string guitar made in Japan that's now discontinued unfortunately) when it was bone dead stock :
I got this guitar back in 2009. Neck was just beautiful and it just had really good sustain. Pickups, electronics and bridge were nothing to write home about though.
Fast forward to recent times (pic courtesy of phone, so again, crap quality)
Now equipped with Seymour Duncan Blackouts, a new Hipshot bridge also with Graphtec string saver saddles, tone pot is gone (because well, I don't have a use for one and I quite frankly don't miss it at all) and on/off switch for the battery.
Bridge and saddles were the most recent upgrade, just all in the one package, done this year while the electronics/pickups were later in the year in 2009.
Funny story behind the pickups and on/off switch actually.
The pickups were wired in with the help of Neil, who we know around here as Crusty Philtrum. When I was say "with the help of", I mean he did 90 per cent of the work and I was kinda just watching on the side occasionally helping because I know jack all about electronics :laugh2:
The on/off switch was actually done out of necessity, since I thought I had a stereo jack, but turns out I didn't, so it couldn't be wired conventionally like you would with active pickups.
Just wired the battery terminal thing (I think, I'm not really sure since as I said, guitar electronics is not my strong point) straight to the switch so we could get the pickups working.
I actually ended up REALLY liking this mod, because you can just disconnect the battery without unplugging the lead (since it's not connect to the output jack anyway) and it's been good for saving battery life.
The pickups actually still work with the switch off, just the output lowers significantly, so you can kinda go from a high gain sound to a low gain crunch by flicking the switch haha.
That all said, that's my last and only set of Blackouts I'll buy.
The output is just too ridiculous really and the overall tonal character just isn't as good as EMG 707s.
Still better than the stock pickups and obviously far less hum/less noise, if I had to say something positive about the BOs.
Also, you might be able to see I couldn't seem to be able to keep the actual knob on the volume control/pot thing
As for the bridge, here's a pic that demonstrates the difference in size :
The bridge on the right is the original, stock, crappy Ibanez bridge, the one on the left is the Hipshot aftermarket bridge that were made specifically to fit RG7421s and replace the original bridge.
As you can see, it's basically double the thickness of the original bridge.
When you actually see the two bridges together in real life, it's extremely apparent just how superior the Hipshot bridge is in overall build quality.
It's made of brass instead of whatever cheap metal was used for the original bridge and you can really see the difference in the material used when you see the bridges.
After replacing the old bridge with that badboy, the sustain increased and along with the new saddles, tuning stability is better. Guitar actually sounds a little better too, which is quite cool.
So while it's a pretty common guitar as far as Ibanez 7 strings go, I guess it actually does at least have a bit of a bit of an interesting story/some interesting info about it.
