Always liked Tony MacAlpine's playing, hated his tone. Same with Frank Gambale, Paul Gilbert, and Vinnie Moore. Such great players, but screechy tone.

i like frank gambale as well........vinnie moore doesn't really do much for me........man.......too many shredders not enough room......our media sucks.....all these great talent that goes unnoticed.....i just found 4 great unknown shredders online yesterday......

Re: the REAL best shredders...

I think Jason Becker, John Petrucci, and Marty Friedman are the greatest of all time. I'll vote for Becker, because Altitudes is, in my opinion, the greatest shred song ever, followed by Black Star (Yngwie Fatsteen).

Re: the REAL best shredders...

Marty Friedman, George Lynch and Satch are the best in my book. They're all very unique players, not only in style, but in sound. Truly from most shredders, they get their tone from the way they play, more than their rig has to offer.

For example: Marty Friedman uses Crate Black Voodoos, directly plugged in sometimes. I know people who've tried them and said they lacked dynamics and sounded flat, but when Marty plugs into them they sound incredibly dynamic and very much singing.

Re: the REAL best shredders...

Out of all those guys Steve Vai is in a class by himself as far as I'm concerned.

Other than Yngwie, he's the only one that most people would be able to pick out by listening to five seconds of his playing.

And he has more creativity than most people on the planet.

Steve Vai is like the guitar equivalent of Salvador Dali......

:D

Re: the REAL best shredders...

OK, the stupid poll thingy says I've already voted on this, which I haven't as I've just now clicked on to it. My vote would be for Richie Kotzen but I don't see him listed anyway.

Na, it's just an old thread.

Gogo Steve Morse.

Re: the REAL best shredders...

I like them all, I wouldn't say any are better than the rest, but I prefer Yngwie. He was the "original" that really provided opportunities for those others to get "on the map". His total command of the instrument is just incredible to me. There is no other guitarist whom I prefer to watch play...everything is smooth and flows, and he makes it look sooooooo damn easy.

I saw him with Alcatrazz. I went to see them because of Graham Bonnet's work with MSG and Rainbow. I had not heard him before. He was a madman..throwing his guitar as high as he could in the air, playing with his teeth and behind his back, swinging the guitar around his neck, AND he could play. He just completely floored me with his playing, tone, and stage presence/showmanship. I still remember it pretty vividly, 21 years later.

Re: the REAL best shredders...

Pablo Gilberto

Marty Friedman

Yngwie Malmsteen

Steve Morse (Awesome live!)

Sorry, I just cannot decide :)

Buckethead (aka Brian Carroll) :saeek:
I would have actually voted for Buckethead. I think he is the most technically able player on the planet.

Re: the REAL best shredders...

wooooooooow this is an old thread.

Back in march I voted for Michael Romeo.
I stay true to that vote.

Just watch the 'guitar chapter' video, and you will see what I mean when I say Michael Romeo is the fastest fat kid on the planet.
