The right speaker for digtal/ digital modelling amps..

Is there an ideal speaker for modelling amps ? Big or small magnet? Can large magnets sound harsher or bring out any harshness in digital amps?

Welcome to the forum!

If the amp also models the speaker, then I would choose the flattest sounding speaker there is. You essentially need a PA speaker that is full range/flat response.

Re: The right speaker for digtal/ digital modelling amps..

I'm having good result plugging my Eleven Rack into an EV ZLX12P (and ZXA1 sub).
Celestion is coming with a coaxial 12" speaker that should fit in a guitar cab and targeted for modellers.
Tech21 is coming with a new Power Engine that should give a better guitar cab feel than PA speakers
Laney has an LFR112 which is getting good reviews
Line6 has the Powercab fitted with IR.
Atomic CLR is a monitor/PA cab and is highly regarded for creating your patches as it is (very) flat.
Xitone is building custom cabs (also very highly regarded) for modellers.

Re: The right speaker for digtal/ digital modelling amps..

I’d like to see a feature on modellers that throws out an inverse transfer function for some popular speakers and cabinet types, allowing their cabinet models to work more as if you had a neutral, flat speaker.

I'm very pleased with the sound I get running my Spidervalve through an Eminence Texas Heat/Swamp Thang combo.

Mackie Thumps aren't exactly flat- they have a lot of low mids....but I use one for rehearsal with my Fractal. Once I understood what it was doing to my sound, I was able to compensate.

Re: The right speaker for digtal/ digital modelling amps..

get a Blue Marvel
should be one laying around somewhere
they snatch them out of Peaveys in record numbers

neutral speakers

get an EHX speaker from GC for $44

Re: The right speaker for digtal/ digital modelling amps..

I think the Blue Marvel is a crunchy 40w speaker that definitely has a voicing. Not flat at all.

If I were looking for a speaker to use with a modeler I would primarily be looking for a high wattage speaker, as cone break up introduces unique speaker characteristics.

If a speaker has and abundance of high mids or low mids or a big bass, or a bright treble... that's less of a concern as eq freq's can be matched, reduced and increased where needed. Where as you cannot remove, hide or accurately replicate specific, unique cone breakup properties.

Speakers I would look at would be the Mesa MC90, Eminence Delta Pro, Electro Voice EVM12L and the WGS ET90.

If you're playing with a band, get a powered PA speaker. If you're playing at home and volume is a concern, get studio monitors.

Technically speaking you should be looking at FRFR (Full Range Flat Response) speakers like Celestion’s (new and only) offering:

https://celestion.com/product/200/f12x200/

Doesn’t mean that it’s going to sound best though i.e. see here for a basic explanation:

https://blog.andertons.co.uk/learn/what-is-an-frfr-speaker-cabinet

Interesting to note that the Marshall CODE series contain guitar cabinet speakers specifically voiced for the CODE series i.e. not FRFR speakers.

Just to be clear, you already have an amp and are looking for a replacement speaker? Or you have a floor modeler and are looking for something to run it through? If it is the former, a high wattage speaker like a Classic Lead 80 or 100, or the new speaker Dale linked to but I'm not sure if it's available yet.

Re: The right speaker for digtal/ digital modelling amps..

^^^ You make a good point. Never bothered to look on Sweetwater's website before posting i.e. that speaker has been "coming soon" for months and months and months now. Wonder what's up with that???

Re: The right speaker for digtal/ digital modelling amps..

When I had a Vox AD50VT amp, I replaced the stock speaker (not a bad one either) with a Celestion Classic Lead 80. It was the perfect speaker for that amp. If I had a floor board modelling unit, I'd get a powered PA speaker.

Re: The right speaker for digtal/ digital modelling amps..

FWIW, I run my GT-1000 through my interface and M-Audio BX-8 monitors and I also run it through an ISP Stealth power amp and an Avatar 1-12 Convertible cab with a Classic Lead 80 for a more "amp-like" experience. The cool thing about the GT-1000 is that I have cab sims on the sub outs (XLR outs) which go to the interface or PA and I have the cab sims turned off on the main (1/4") outs that go to the power amp and cab. The main outs also have an output knob so it's easy to adjust the volume. I can use all the outputs together, so I can have a guitar cabinet onstage that I control the volume and still be feeding the FOH with the cab sim outs. Pretty cool, will be cooler if I get another cab to run stereo :-)

I'm sure most of the other modelers can do similar setups.

I second this comment -I would avoid speakers with very distinct voicings -like any Jensen, Greenbacks, 30s or Lead style 70s and 75s. Eminence makes some pretty flat 70 and 75 watt options in my experience.

Re: The right speaker for digtal/ digital modelling amps..

I have a Roland 40XL (cube series). 40 watts with a "10 Roland spec. speaker. The best sounds were the JC clean and acoustic. Black face was Good. The Fender Tweed and Marshall settings were slightly overdriven without any gain added. I swapped the standard speaker for a Celestion Bulldog, samespec 8 ohm and "10". 3 things happened; there was a slight drop in volume output; the Tweed and Marshall voicings cleaned up, ie; no gritty sounds -(unless dialled in). Much better. high gain is slightly smoother. On the other hand the acoustic settings, not quite as good but still pleasing. It's all compromise. The magnet on the Celestion is one third smaller than on the stock speaker. This suggests a large magnet reacts quicker, with a bit more more force and is more sensitive and therefore brings out the harshness apparent in many digital amp modellers...in my opinion

Re: The right speaker for digtal/ digital modelling amps..

I thought the 'voicing, was in the amp..not speaker . The Marshall sound is surely in the circuit design, choice of valves ..regardless of brand of speaker or magnet type

Kinda shocking that "negative IRs" (EQ flatteners) for actual speakers used haven't become a thing yet.
