Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer POLL OPEN!

Man, skip town for a week and I miss all the action! I might sign up for one of these. Specs don't mean as much as tone...so ya'll figure that out on your own and let me know where there's somethin' worth talking about.

What I'd really dig hearing is like a badass mutha' of the overwound Alnico II meets Pearly Gates. Like, I dig the '59 but it isn't fat & smooth...and it doesn't have any kick in the mids for harmonics. The Alnico II solves the tone mojo but it's got no thrust...like it'll grind but it can't send the input stage of a plexi into orbit without a booster pedal.

Soooo....like...imagine for a couple of minutes...WHAT IF?!?

Eddie V. and Billy G. met up somewhere out sidea' Roswell NM and sat there with a fine malt & other possibly other 'mind enhancements..a couple' geetars, some kinda Marshall & a pickup winder!!

:friday:

Double cream is a dealbreaker for me...UNLESS...it's under an Antiquity cover without engraving. Just a plain ol' vanilla antiq. cover. Yeeaaah...

Low profile. high mojo.

I'd really dig seeing the final thing either Zebra or reverse Zebra...hell mix it up and make the trem spacing a reverse zebra and straight zebra for the standard spacing. Either the braided shield or 4-conductor variety is fine by me.

Anywhoo...if it's gonna be anything like the above put me down for a couple three. Seriously! I'm gonna be in IL from about the 1st to the 15th with limited interknot access but I'll drop in & see what's going on. Though man, it would be really cool if the ideas of tone & specs get addressed before the sign-up period...if that's already been done just point me in that general direction and off I'll go!

Chow,

Chow,

The specs are set guys. The discussion completed and the votes tallied. The threads are all in the pickup lounge

Wow, could be awesome. Will this eventually become a new model in production? Sounds similar to the WCR Goodwood which is about 9.5k wound with 42 gauge wire and an Alnico V magnet and the best pickup I have ever heard, bar none. This might be similar but at a great price.

I wonder if balanced winding would give it a fatter tone? What about wax potting? Some winders do a light potting to give the pickups a more elastci/airier tone and some use special potting techniques.

Normal Spacing
Zebra/Nickel Cover (by one fraking vote)
42 gauge
4 Wire
9-10K
Short Legs
With Logo
wax potted completely
unbalanced, scatterwound
Dunaged A5 Mag

No, it won't be going into production. Thats the point that triggered the whole thing. Check out the other threads over the last few weeks

Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer POLL OPEN!

Thanks, I didn't realize it was a done deal nor that it was decided to not be a production model. Seems weird though because it would be a top seller. Odd.

I bet it will sound even better than your average Duncan since it will be hand wound by MJ. Should be awesome!

I wonder how it will compare to the other hand winders out there like WCR and Wolfetone.

Surprised they are potting it though.....

Give the posts a read. Your questions will be answered

Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer POLL OPEN!

I am curious how it will compare to the WCR Goodwood at 9.5 which is the best I have ever heard in any guitar. I also have a Wolfetone Marshallhead which is amazing and these are hand wound in small amounts so there is a lot of attention to detail. I am dying to see how a Duncan 10k would match up!

As soon as I get the new 10K next year, I'll be able to tell you! I've used all of Wagner's pickups and this will be a great A/B.

While waiting for the 1st of January, lemme ask you a question that I've been meaning to ask you for sometime now. I'd appreciate your time and all and am not in a hurry. So please take your time.

You had a set of Timbuckers and those Wagners. Could you supply a report on those? I remember you selling them timbuckers and really am wondering what your preception about those WCRs are.

I had a set of Fillmore's for a while and for me they did not work out. I believe Jim is a great guy, very friendly and all. I love his strat single coils even though I have sold them with the guitar they were in. But anyways I just wanna say that I think Jim is a great person but I sort of was thinking that his strongest side was his single coils not the HB's. But it seems like my perception has been wrong. That's why I would like YOU to elaborate on these, since I trust your word more than all them raving reviews on the LPF! ;)

Best,

B

Re: The SD Forum Special 10.0K Bridge Bucker Offer POLL OPEN!

Jim's pickups are pretty unreal. I have the Goodwoods in a Les Paul and the tone is astonishing. By far the best pickup I have heard in a Les Paul to date. I have yet to find anything as creamy, clear, rich, full in my life. Can't wait to hear about the new Duncan 10k though.

The Fillmore is unreal in a PRS.

I do not think our concepts of a "great pickup" match. Please don't get this the wrong way, but, while I had quite strong feelings against the BBQ, you loved it. See? ;)

Anyway I dunno why I am writing this, but honestly speaking still am happy to see you liking your scores.

Best,

Peace.

THere´s a nifty button on the top of this forum and most other online message boards that says "search"... type 10k PAF in there and watch what happens ;)

Just to clarify, as the other posts in this thread have a similar character: This is NOT a production Duncan, nor is it intende to ever become one at this point... it is a Small batch of Custom shop pickups, and the pricing carries other restrictions, for ex. not being able to sell it as new at any point in time... Or no 21 day Exchange.

This is a Pickup DUncan is making FOR us, essentially because so many of us have been complaining about it not existing and the CS being so expensive that at some point Scott entered Negotiations w/ SD for a limited run.... and it being christmas and SD being the charitable folks, they are agreed to do it.

One of the reasons demand for these seems high is
1. 80% of the poeple that commit to ordering something on the Net never follow through (otherwise I´d have long sold the 500 CDs ;))
2. people jumping on the "if everyone´s ranting about it, it must be good" bandwagon
3. the rare chance to get a CS pickup at a near production price
4. Some, like myself, didn´t care for the idea (or the way it was carried), but have still generally become interested in what it sounds like. I honestly don´t expect to be liking mine (but may very much so..), and I´m pretty sure that a few will be disappointed....

If you want this pickup after this run, you´ll pay about 70 Bucks more, as it will then be a "standard" CS pickup (but if you can´t live with say double cream, 4 cond wiring, or any other spec , then you´ll have to do that anyway) ..... And I don´t expect a deal like this to happen again anytime soon, either...

Hi Dr. Barlo.....

Actualyl...after switching to the WCR Goodwood....all my Rios have been kicked to the curb! I get such better cut and clarity with the Goodwood. The Goodwood is about as good as it gets for me. :)

Yah.

I did that and endded up with about 50 pages of reading material to sort through... and on first glance most of it was most of it juvinille bickering and "me-too" or whiny. Sorry man, but sorting through all that mucky muck...it's just not worth my energy. I spent about 30 minutes giving it the once over and didn't find any real meat, hence my request for some kinda inkling of what this pickup might sound like, spacing, colors, blah blah blee blee.

And if it's already been decided, then whoopty freakin' doo!!! Point me in the right direction because it seems like there's a lack of direction here. Sure, there was a poll but its closed & gone...I (and probably a BUNCH of other people) never got a chance to see that. Plus, there's like 14 other pages of stuff in this thread alone...most of it condradictory.

I'm sorry you were late to the party but if you can't be bothered to do a little reading to catch up I would suggest you not be making baseless claims about direction. This endeavor was ran quite well by Scott. Everyone had a voice in the process. The votes were tallied and on we go. You can't expect some thing like this to run for months so every causual reader can have voice in something they probably won't be buying anyway.

The order sheet isn't even up yet. If you want one there is still plenty of time.
