Re: The Well XLIV- Ha! No-one expects the Spanish Inquisition!
So here are some tough ones
Indeed!
What's your Fav Adrian Smith solo and why?
I'd prolly have to say the studio version of Revelations (in fact I think Revelations are both Dave and Adrian's best studio solos pretty much-at least my favorites).
Because he totally nailed pacing, dynamics, and tension over a fast and "dark" sounding backing. He starts out with the fast trill, nails that pinch and then the slow choppy descending pentatonic lick . Then the fast legato open string to higher fret hammer-on lick (also done at the begining of Back In the Village-my fave lick of his), and then he goes into that minimal note slow bending lick milking it for all it's worth with the vibrato, then the fast stacatto pedal point lick up to a screaming bend and more perfect vibrato.
(and if you listen carefully a few times, you will hear that Dave's solo mirrors the same general themes but the order is pretty much reversed). There was alot of forethought there from them both.
What'S your Fav KK Downing solo and why?
I love KK's lead playing cos it's just so...strange? He kind of just goes for it, and it's pretty much the same solo every song but I do really like K.K.s echoplex solo wank on The Sinner (from Unleashed). Usually don't care for all that whammy bar wank stuff, but he does a good job of keeping it "musical" and it fits the mood of the tune.
What's your Fav Bruce Dickinson song?
I'm not familiar really with his solo material, so cannot choose there- For vocals w/ Iron Maiden? I'd have to tip my hat to:
Any of the old live versions of Revelations (LAD, 83 Dortmund Concert, 85 RIR, etc)
Invaders-the timing- that pause before the end of each phrase and how he finishes it up by it running right into the next line.
And Powerslave for anything and everything
