I couldn’t disagree more that theory causes “sameness.” There’s also only one way out of the woods. Difference being the ones with the maps can tell you exactly how they got there.

Let me put it this way. This is hardly the same as everyone else, in fact it isn’t the same as anyone else. It was my partner’s idea to fuse dreampop and metal. At 2:23, the lead breaks (which fit in well where there’s room that was originally going to be for rapping,) I didn’t “use theory” the way you might be thinking where I purposely chose every note and articulation. “I’ll start with a full A# to C natural bend and blah blah…”

I just improvised all kinds of takes from the heart until we both agreed which sounded exactly right which we pretty much saw eye to eye on. It’s thanks to theory I know through analysis listening back exactly what I played and why it works and sounds to build from for next time and even avoid repeating myself.

My bandmate and I collaborated with the (then) singer from death metal band Engorged many moons ago & have an album's worth of stuff recorded that's kinda whacky/lo-fi/avant garde cuz he & I were into a lot of those bands/projects (Mr. Bungle etc) at the time..

And those are fortresses not castles. I loved hiking around them and imagining what things were like back in the day. You stand at the bottom of those colossal fucking walls 5-6 meters thick & look up at the ramparts & wonder what it would be like seeing boiling oil & hails of arrows heading your way....man that's a sobering thought :laugh2:

I think I damaged him. Like I said, he now has a complex about his playing being terrible. He knows it's true but instead of actually learning something and improving, he prefers this neurotic state where he gets a secondary gain by continually (for years on end) throwing a temper tantrum against the whole forum and just embarrassing himself further.
