Those G12T-75's drives me crazy...

Better was sound when using them with V30 in x pattern. have a JCM 800 2204 head. now i have two G12H30 Anniversaries out to try. will go that combo with V30 in x pattern. damn, i played through that dammned 75's and sound is too harsh in most of settings i try. just f..k..g annoying hi end frequencies. i play them for about 20 hours at pretty high volumes, and still they sound harsh. together with V30 much better i think. now i will try rewire the 1960 A Lead Cabinet and put in them G12H30/V30 mix in x pattern, just because i already have only two H30's. and V30 breaks up earlier than all these speakers, so i think they kind of fit in, as they are probably already broken in, or it will be next month or two. i am not in any band situation yet, i just crank the amp twice a week for about two hours, sometimes i go into another room, and just enyoy playing through it. that's all i can do for now.. i am scared that before the speakers will break in, it will be time for serious tubes replacement, but, if i am gonna get the amp to luthier, i will tell him to tame those f..k..g highs a bit down, for f..k sake. apologies, but i am little angry now. kind of dissapointed, but it's ok. and i have some kind of attenuator someone build one for me. it's cool sometimes, but those speakers needs some serious volume before they break in. Arrgh, those painfull goddamn waiting to whole thing balances in the right, acceptable way.. maybe i should get one MXR 10 Equalizer to cut those annoying treble spike a bit down. i have an active fx loop installed.

You sound pissed mate!

I have a Marshall 1960B 4 x 12 which has G12T-75's in too. I'm switching out 2 of them for 2 V30's in an x pattern. Was originally going to switch all 4 out buy the G12T-75's have a nice low end response so I'll keep them in for now. Have heard V30's give more clarity and kick.

Was also considering a Mesa cab with 4 V30's but I'll try this and if I don't like it I'll just sell the cab.

Try a pair of Eminence Man O War speakers. They're Eminence's take on the G12T75, and are a little scooped out like the G12T75 but the high end on the Eminence is alot smoother and isn't nearly as harsh.

Does ANYBODY like G12T-75's? Why does Celestion even bother to make them?

+++ Yes! I have a Man'o'War and it's a fantastic speaker. I believe it's the Eminence equivalent of the G12T75. The G12T75 can sound good in the right application and paired with the right speakers, but it's not really a speaker for bright amps. Some of the old plexi or boutique plexies that I have heard with them sound really good because those amps are darker and with a lot of nasally mids. The G12T75 takes out a bit of the honky mids, adds low end, and brightens those amps, so they can sound really good, but like I said, in the right application.

Another speaker which is very similar to the G12T75 that is a great, great speaker is the Mesa Boogie Black Shadow. It's not as harsh as the G12T75, but sounds really similar, and as I understand it, is just a tweaked G12T75.

Re: Those G12T-75's drives me crazy...

My 4x12 came with them. The highs would about cut your head off. I changed to V30 and others for awhile, but now I'm happy with Greenbacks for many years.

now i will try rewire the 1960 A Lead Cabinet and put in them G12H30/V30 mix in x pattern,

There you go.

Re: Those G12T-75's drives me crazy...

Is there a major difference between Celestion Vintage 30's and the Marshall re-branded Vintage 30's? As in sound quality?

I like them for clean tones (like a modern hi-fi jazz tone) and for copping Yngwie-like sounds. I love them in a X-pattern with the Mesa V30's from my old 2x12 Rectocab.

Re: Those G12T-75's drives me crazy...

Hmm I was told they're the same just with a Marshall speaker on the back haha. They're cheaper too but will it pay for me to spend the extra £30 (UK GBP) and get the normal Celestions?

According to some research I was doing the other day, the Marshall labeled V30 is supposed to be made to pre-Rola specs. Because when the Rola speced V30s came out, the folks at Marshall didn't like 'em.

Re: Those G12T-75's drives me crazy...

What does Pre-Rola mean?

I just want it sound as close to a Mesa cab as I can, without spending the money!

Re: Those G12T-75's drives me crazy...

I love the 12-75. They only come together at stage volume, anything less they sound harsh.

I always have them miced up in another room and listen through monitors and they sound great.

I like 'em for clean and single coil stuff. Since I play mostly humbuckers and insist one a good distorted tone :) I went with G12-65 for my Marshall and ditched my 4×12.

Re: Those G12T-75's drives me crazy...

I haven't try that 75's alone before.. only mix it with V30. sound was better, less harsh. now i will give two G12H30 Annies mixed with two Vintage 30 a try. V30's are probably almost broken in. one H30 has about 30 hours of playing. but one is new, so i will put it in the bottom. cannot wait to see how will JCM sound with these:) if those would not be good enough i am probably gonna try G12-65's or Greenbacks. my cab is angled not slanted. probably two G12-75's would sound better in a 2x12 oversized cabinet, not angled. and then break in speakers sound less harsh. i am gonna keep them for later experiments. i play through JCM with different pickups. the best sounding was SH5 Custom in the bridge and Pearly Gates on the neck of my Les Paul. i think i am gonna replace SH6 Distortion and Jazz in my SG for something with lower input, and warmer sounding. i play mainly thrash metal, but there are some hard vintage rock/bluesy fusions too, which i also like to play. the amp covers it all. with Boss SD-1 in front as a boost for rhthym plus Digitech Bad Monkey when i am trying to play really heavy solos. i think i am gonna tune my guitars down a bit too.. and try this MXR 10 Equalizer in the fx loop.

They mix well with a lot of speakers. Great to add a little extra flavor to a mix. But cranked they sound great to me. Of course depends on what sound you want. I set my controls to e pretty thick and fat.

Pre-Rola generall refers to Celestions made before they moved to their Ipswitch factory (They were previously made in Suffolk) and started putting "ROLA CELESTION" on the labels for a short time. The Rola thing is nothing new, because Rola bought out Celestion all the way back in 1947. But when the move and label changed, some of the specs on certain speakers changed, one of them being the Vintage 30. Which is why both Marshall and Mesa have their own versions of the Vintage 30 made.

As far as making your 1960 sound like a Mesa, about the only thing in Mesa's lineup that is comparable is a Stiletto cab. IIRC, even the standard Rectifier cab has almost an extra cubic foot of volume. A set of Mesa labled Vintage 30s (all three sound slightly different) would help, though.
