Thru neck design

I was looking at a new guitar and have been contemplating a Neck thru design such as the firebird. What I want is alot of sustain without really having to try to force it out of a pedal.( I know I may still need one but) What other guitars have a neck thru design that would be worth a play to see if i wanted it? I play older rock and blues so I really don't want a super dark tone.

Re: Thru neck design

See if you can find a Schecter Ultra III to try ...... nice neck through, Tapped SD custom/custom & '59 pups, plays great.....IDK about the tone being too dark tho (Mahog bod Maple neck/cap)...I'd at least try one if you could....

Re: Thru neck design

the dude plays older rock and blues, personally jackson isn't the design I'd want for that (wide neck, floyd, etc.)

Neck thru really is not going to give you more sustain, it is totally on a guitar by guitar basis (the resonance of the wood). I've had a bolt on that sustained longer than my neck thru. I've had LP's that sustained way different than each other. Find a guitar you like and are comfortable playing, and try a bunch until you find the one that sustains best. Then set up properly and it should sustain no problem.

+infinity. a properly set up strat will sustain for days provided its solid construction to begin with.

Older rock meaning zep, stones, GFR, Beatles etc.
As for sustainable guitars. I have a strat with sustain, but really too bright sounding for alot of tunes. My paul is not too bad, but still i guess I should have it tweaked a bit more. The Torino has little sustain to it and a good sound for stuff like ac/dc or GFR. But i still lack something....:banghead:

Most USA models are available with fixed bridge as well. I've got a SLATQH thats got a mahogany neck and body, carved maple top, and unlike most other soloists, 22 frets.

Re: Thru neck design

You can't play blues on a wide neck. Can't be done.

just realized how big the necks are. But maybe I should just bite the bullet and play a bunch of SG's or even a few semi hollows. Maybe something will come out of it.

Re: Thru neck design

I was being sarcastic. I'm British.
You can play whatever the heck you want on a Jackson, just as well as any other guitar.

Re: Thru neck design

I'm thinking a semi-hollow would fit the bill here. I owned a beautiful 76' Firebird that I regretfully parted ways with. I can honestly say the neck thru construction was solid, But it sustained no better than most set neck mahogany guitars in that class. (i.e.) SG's, Vee's or explorers . Depending on your budget? There are a few good semi's in the sub $500 range I would recommend. Off the the top of my head, The Gregg Bennett Royale RL-3 is worth a look. :cool2:

BTW, Do any of you read the original post before you spew out remarks?:eyecrazy:

Another vote for the Jackson Soloist. The two big USA models (SL1T and SL2HT) are available with Gotoh tune-O-matic bridges and strings-through-body mounting. I have an SL2HT myself and love it. It has amazing sustain. I feel like I could change pickups and do anything in the world with it, though the factory set is extremely versatile. The only thing I would change about it would be 22 frets instead of 24; I think that would make the neck pickup sound a little sweeter.

Don't understand this reasoning.
If you can't play rock and blues on a Jackson Soloist you probably can't play it on any guitar.
Soloists come loaded with 2 single coils on some models, as well as a JB bridge.
JB's are proven pickups from classic rock to modern extreme metal, and single coils ensure you get that clean sound you'd need.
It wont sound as bright as his strat, they are beautifully crafted and well made instruments and they sustain extremely well and also come in fixed bridge versions.
They also have epic sustain.
What's not to love?
