To All MXR Flanger Users

Ok this has been bugging me for a while and I don't know if its a defect or just normal for this pedal.
I own the MXR EVH Flanger and not all the time but more often then not when I try and plug it in, turn on my amp I get a faint swooshing sound coming out of the amp speaker while the pedal is off. If I hear this and I turn the pedal on, I get a really loud sound kind of similar to when your tv loses signal and you get snow but also sounds a bit like a siren mixed in with that cause of the pedal sweeping, I guess thats the best way to describe it if that makes sense, either way its loud as hell. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I've tried plugging it in so many different ways and same result, its random sometimes it'll do it sometimes not. Tried with the amp off, plug it all in same thing. Tried it by turning on my amp first same thing happens. Sometimes its fine and doesn't matter how I plug it in, and when it does happen it seems to stop randomly. I usually plug in the input cable first, flip on the pedal then off, turn the knobs a few times, plug in the cable going into the amp next and its usually fine. The weird thing is once it stops the pedal works flawlessly, turning on or off, EVH switch whatever but unplug it and theres a chance it does this again. Like I sad weird sh*t, maybe the batteries are low but I don't use it that much and last time when I changed batteries it started doing it shortly after but not right away. Anyone else experience this? Hope its not a defect, cause I love this pedal.

Re: To All MXR Flanger Users

Probably batteries, it'll suck them dry. Those flangers use alot of power(I had a mains powered MXR flanger with a huge 3 prong plug coming out the back) so battery life is probably 4 or 5 mormal uses. Sounds like what most pedals do when the batteries go dead.

Re: To All MXR Flanger Users

Use a powersupply, and see if the troubles continues!
Sounds like the compander ran out of volts to work with, most cuts off at 8.5v.
And gives off weird swooshing and fading noises before they shut down.

Re: To All MXR Flanger Users

You know thats what I thought except once I make it stop the pedal works fine and would be fine for months on the same batteries. I own a few other MXR pedals and none have a problem.
Last time I put batteries in there was months ago and like I said it'll do this when I plug it in, then make it stop and everything is fine and pedal works flawlessly and sounds like it should. If the batteries were low they would of died a long time ago in the pedal but they don't. Only does this when plugging in and I don't have a power supply.

Re: To All MXR Flanger Users

I had a similar problem with my vintage MXR Flanger (the kind with the attached AC power cord). I used a two-prong adapter, and that solved the problem. Woohoo!

Re: To All MXR Flanger Users

I've got the EVH Phave 90, no problems and no noise. Its powered by a Dunlop Brick.

Re: To All MXR Flanger Users

I plugged in newer batteries and everything seems fine now. Weird sh!t. I've had a Phase 90, I've owned a Dyna Comp for 3 years now and recently bought the awesome Carbon Copy. I love MXR stuff and its never let me down which is why this baffles me. I guess it really might be low batteries doing this but like I said once it stops the pedal works fine and doesn't give off a low battery tone like some do.

Re: To All MXR Flanger Users

Wow... I have the sampe problem!

I bought a new M-117R Flanger .
When I first go to use it, before stepping on the switch to activate it,
you can hear it swirling softly. Not a big deal. But… when you step on the
switch to activate the effect it makes an extremely loud bunch of noise like
an alarm going off. Very loud. Insanely loud. The guitar input has no effect on it
when it is doing this. Meaning you can't hear the guitar being played. Just the noise.
When it's making the loud noise, the control dials work to alter the noise
but not to eliminate it. It just changes the pattern and all that.

I'm using a new Dunlop Brick power supply. I tried all the different power connecting
wires and tried many different instrument cables. I found that if I unplug the
cables and power cable a few times, eventually it sort of re-sets back to normal
and the unit is fine. Then I shut things down and go about doing something else.
So the next day….or any time I go back to use it again, it starts out with the problem
and I have to unplug the all the cables a few times t have it eventually operate correctly.
I think it's narrowed down to where it can be corrected by just unplugging the power
connection and plugging it back in a few times. Maybe like four times or so.

The sound is so loud it is almost unbelievable.
When I get it to work, it works as it should. It's just getting it to work as it should…..

Re: To All MXR Flanger Users

I avoid any potential problems by not using mine. It sounded great in the store; that memory is all I really need from it.

well, sounds like you need to mail it to Bloodrose's Gear Disposal Service. You can free up some space and not risk hearing it again and spoiling that memory!! Ill even pay the shipping..

Re: To All MXR Flanger Users

So interesting thing, I actually had this happen a few years back... but with a Script logo Phase 90. I had just gotten done playing a song, and there was a distinct whooshing noise coming from the amp. I step on the phaser thinking I left it on but it got louder, because it was already off. I stepped on it again to turn it off and the noise stopped. It did this at least two more times. I think it was due to some funky power issues in the house, but it only ever did it at practice those few times. But I never thought about it again until this thread.
