Tube Amp Snobbery Apology

Re: Tube Amp Snobbery Apology

The truth about snobbery:

If you have any sort of gear/tone preference (and who doesn't?), then you are a snob... because there's always someone out there who will take your preferences personally, get all butthurt about it, and call you a "snob".

They don't call it "discriminating tastes" for nothing.

It's impossible and entirely unreasonable to expect people to love everything and hate nothing.

This is simply not true. Just because someone else gets offended and calls me a snob, does not mean I am a snob.

A snob is someone who one who blatantly imitates, fawningly admires, or vulgarly seeks association with those regarded as social superiors, one who tends to rebuff, avoid, or ignore those regarded as inferior or one who has an offensive air of superiority in matters of knowledge or taste.

Having a preference AND holding others who disagree as inferior would be snobbish. Having a preference and someone getting offended is just someone who is immature and thin-skinned.

Trey prefer tube amps. Bruce prefers solid states. Trey and Bruce discuss why they like different amps = no snobbery.

Trey prefer tube amps. Bruce prefers solid states. Trey says Bruce is immature and doesn't have good ears because he uses solid states = snobbery.

Re: Tube Amp Snobbery Apology

Snobbery essentially involves, in matters of taste, putting down the choices of others that do not coincide with your own. It is inherently immature and illogical.

Not to mention annoying.

Which is why the typical "snob-pointer-outer" is actually just projecting their own inherent snobbery at someone's preference/personal experience.

Securb: "I hate Chinese Les Pauls; I had one and sold it - they're cheap"
Treyhaislip: "I own one and I don't agree. Why U got 2 B a snob?"

So you see, snobbery goes both ways.

Pro Tip: it's not "corksniffer"... it's "corquesniffer".

Sounds smashingly more elegant that way.

Re: Tube Amp Snobbery Apology

The funny thing is most of the vintage Strats and Teles of the world are sitting on some Dentist's office wall or in a Lawyers office.

Well now, that's a rather presumptuous statement, innit?

Nope, not really. I have found over the years that people that put more stock in their equipment than their playing do so for a reason. They are typically limited musically in some way. They use their snobbery to hide their shortcomings and limitations.

Like a buddy of mine has said, learn to make crap sound good. Of course, as I have told him, once you do so, just imagine what you can do with something better.

It's presumptuous to exclaim that "most" of the vintage Strats/Teles are "sitting on some Dentist's office wall or in a Lawyers office".

Because you have no way to authenticate that statement; you yourself simply have not seen with your own eyes most of the vintage Strats/Teles.

Furthermore, there's always the very real possibility that some of those Dentists/Lawyers with vintage Strats/Teles can play circles around you.

And you certainly would know.

I am sure there are Lawyers and Dentist that are serviceable guitar players, I was referring generally to collectors and gear snobs. What I said is they are typically limited musically in some way. Let's take you for example. I would say you are a serviceable guitar player. However, I have never heard anything original you have written. That may be your limitation. I could be wrong and I hope I am. Could you please post something you have written or composed and prove me wrong. I would love to hear an original composition.

This is actually false. Bruce is not putting me down; rather, just the Chinese guitars.

Just disagreeing about something does not equal snobbery. Snobbery entails superiority, not just disagreeing.

Wrong. Where's your logic? You have it backwards.

See, here's how it works. Pay attention:

You are correct about one thing: In the example, Bruce did not put you down.

But in the example, you put Bruce down by calling him a snob because he doesn't like a product that you yourself own.

Snobbery also entails superiority through calling others names like "snob". This insinuates that somehow, you have moral superiority over the other guy because he's supposedly a "snob". (For the record, the term "troll" also falls into this bucket)

It's surprising... then not so surprising if you know human nature... if you look a little beyond the surface, one can see all the manipulation and BS people put forth on a day-to-day basis.
