UGHH Not another ******* superstrat!

Re: UGHH Not another ******* superstrat!

I dunno... I keep a few RGs around. In fact, they're absolutely the only humbucker guitars I own (Firebird pickups don't really count). I mostly use 'em for session work and times when I need to do some serious dive-bombing. Les Pauls are ergonomic pigs, SGs are butt-plug ugly, and if you really want the truth if I EQ my amps right I can fool you into thinking that's what I'm using with my RGs.

Re: UGHH Not another ******* superstrat!

To me the Jazzmaster body style is without a doubt most comfortable; in terms of bridge/knob position, contours, balance... They're also more attractive to me, def. moreso than a Les Paul or Telecaster; I think most non-guitar players prefer offsets, style-wise (those not enculturated/indoctrinated toward Strat/Gibson outlines.) No clue why there aren't more Super-Jazz/Jags.

Super Strats are the shep. Deal wit it. I can get jazz tones out of my neck and middle, blues and fender in between tones in positions 2 and 4, in between gibson tones with neck and bridge, hard rock tones with the middle and bridge, and even tele tones with my bridge partial split. I'm not exaggerating either.

Dare I ask how you have come to this conclusion? I would think the polar opposite: unless people have been listening extensively to surf, alternative or other genres where such guitars are common they have in my experience been likely to gravitate towards the Strat or LP as the "archetypal" guitars. (Jazz cats is another matter, of course.)

Re: UGHH Not another ******* superstrat!

The ergonomics of a Strat work better for me. I don't like weird, unbalanced shapes. I don't generally dig the sound of a distorted guitar tone, nor the trappings of most Super Strats- Floyd, 24 frets, pointy headstock...blah. But hey, I don't like the traditional Strat appointments that much, either...I always have to mod mine.

Re: UGHH Not another ******* superstrat!

Superstrats burn well, so I can't totally despise them. Unfortunately people who play them are more difficult to kill.

Re: UGHH Not another ******* superstrat!

They've always done very well for themselves for sure. The RG series was something else though, they really skyrocketed after releasing the RG.

They got big making lawsuit stratocasters in 70's...

Re: UGHH Not another ******* superstrat!

I like my strats and teles "vintage". humbuckered super strats never sound right to me when I am playing them. something is always missing to my ears.

Others of course, do fine with them.

Indeed. They have a tendency to fight back, and usually with something more dangerous than a pointy stick.

Actual Strats and Teles... vintage all the way. I agree with you.

But for the rare occasions when I use humbuckers, it's shred sticks all the way. Ibanez RGs mostly. The only Gibsons I like are Firebirds.

If you like Firebird... What's wrong with SG's? Humbuckers?

Re: UGHH Not another ******* superstrat!

I agree with you that SGs are hideous, and LPs' ergonomics are whack. That's why I ended up with a huge pile of my favorite Duncan PAFs: Ant, Seth, PC, JB, C with nothing to put them in... So I thought well I'll just stick them all in a strat. And then it ended up sounding awesome!

I kind of have a jones for something with P90s but I won't use a LP or SG. I'm kind of keeping an eye out for a deal on one of those three-pickup P90 explorers Gibson made in the early 80s. Put a vibrola on the ass-end and it could be hot stuff...

Re: UGHH Not another ******* superstrat!

Failing that I might do an Explorer build next fall. I was thinking about doing a Tele but I am asking myself: would I really use it all that much, or do I just want it because I'm grouchy about the one that got run over by a truck? I think it's the latter and I would get more use out of a P90 guitar.

Re: UGHH Not another ******* superstrat!

HAAAAA I'd be grouchy too!

P90 Tele sounds pretty sweet. The mumbling stops at 1:20
